TheStar.com - Vienna property offers up a slice of life
Before the Hotel Sacher came the Sacher-Torte, a rich, moist chocolate cake that weighs about as much as a brick and is the cornerstone upon which the Hotel Sacher was built.
The Hotel Sacher property in Salzburg is equally lavish and offers some of the best dining in the city of Mozart's birth.
The rooms at the Sacher are large by European standards and rank among the most moderately priced among five-star properties — standard deluxe rooms start at 237 euros and that's at least 200 euros less than what a similar property in either London or Paris would cost.

Travel Classics: GUARDIAN OF THE SACHERTORTE: Fred Ferretti
That the Demel's torte is virtually identical to the Sachertorte, or that the Imperial Hotel boxes its Imperial Torte in a small white wood crate quite like the one that contains the torte created at the Sacher, bothers Pfliegler not at all.
It remains the only cake legally entitled to be called an "Original Sacher-Torte," one that has been fashioned by an unbroken succession of bakers beginning with Franz Sacher — a kitchen apprentice in the court of the imperial chancellor — who made his first chocolate-covered gâteau back in 1832.
The Austrian courts have repeatedly had to render such dancing-upon-the-head-of-a-pin opinions, including one regarding a cake created for the venerable Viennese pastry shop Demel by a Sacher descendent, called the "Eduard Sacher Torte." But always the Sacher's torte has managed to survive such challenges.

Re: Sacher torte - Hotel or Franz?
On a guess, the Hotel Sacher is probably connected to the same family as Franz Sacher.
I just did a quick google on Franz Sacher and found that he comes from a family of Viennese hoteliers and restaurateurs.

I too share the negative views on the Sacher Torte, but I suggest that you try its competitor, the Imperial Torte, which may be had at the Hotel Imperial and its sister, The Bristol.
Was in Vienna last month and had to try the famous Sacher torte at the Sacher hotel.
I agree, I tried it at the Sacher HOtel and it was dreadful, the torte that is. I thought it was just an old torte that was being pushed on me because I was a tourist.

Demel's sachertorte is firm, with soft chocolate icing, but the cake is a bit dry and comes with a small jug of cream rather than Hotel Sacher's generous swirl of whipped cream.
Although the sachertorte served in Café Demel is good, it's not quite as tasty as the 'genuine' cake at Hotel Sacher.
The row over who made the authentic sachertorte was eventually settled in court, which ruled in favour of Hotel Sacher.
