"Hothouse Flowers' sweet smell of success" - 1988   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The nucleus of Hothouse Flowers is O'Maonlai and lead guitarist Fiachna O'Braonain, who met in school and played together in various traditional and electric bands.
It was while busking around Dublin that Hothouse Flowers - whose other members are bassist Peter O'Toole, saxophonist Leo Barnes and drummer Jerry Fehily - attracted the attention that led to their television appearance and the call from Bono.
Hothouse Flowers' music has provoked various comparisons - most notably to Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen - but O'Braonain says that their main inspiration is an album by a fellow Celtic rock band, the Waterboys.

Decadence: Precious Florals in the Poetry of Arthur Symons and Theodore Wratislaw
An examination of "Violet: Prelude" by Symons, and "Orchids" and "Hothouse Flowers" by Wratislaw demonstrates preciousness in the poems.
In "Hothouse Flowers," Wratislaw states decadent taste in flowers more vehemently than it is stated in the previous poems.
Here, the poet compares the hothouse flowers to a "subtly infamous and frail" former lover "whose love still eats [his] soul and life" (Wratislaw 248-49).

Hothouse Flowers/Musical Pollinators by Brooke Comer
Hothouse Flowers pay heed to emotional need - a popular '60s theme, but replayed with more imitation than innovation today - and offer nurturing advice with lyrics like "It doesn't really matter if you're all jumbled up inside as long as you know love is endless and the world is wide.
'Hothouse Flowers" sound like a good name for a band with strong roots in jazz, and though guitarist Fiachna O'Braonain admits to a moderate dose of jazz influence - infused mostly by sax player and Coltrane fan Leo Barnes - the name, regardless of its connotations, wasn't selected as a tribute to any genre.
To insure that "that kind" of freeness is transmitted intact when recording, the Flowers opted for more live takes than overdubs in the studio.

Irish band Hothouse Flowers have always been compared -- fairly or unfairly -- to U2.
But where U2’s music is defined by The Edge’s otherworldly guitar sound, the music of Hothouse Flowers relies on more traditional influences, notably Irish folk music and American soul and gospel.
It also serves to remind what an excellent live band Hothouse Flowers are, much like that other band from Ireland.

Unlike fellow Irish musical legends and survivors of the 1980s U2, Hothouse Flowers have lasted the years without continuous strings of hit singles or media attention.
That is not to say they haven't had their success, they have just been too busy touring Japan, Europe, USA and Australia and selling millions of copies of their albums People, Home, Songs From The Rain and Born to play the chart game.
So Best Of Hothouse Flowers, which includes the hits (both of them) and tracks from their multi-platinum albums is more a chance to remind the world that they still exist, that since 1987 they have consistently delivered big-hearted gospel anthems and that they are one of Ireland's biggest musical exports.

Hothouse Flowers | Biography | MTV
Ireland's Hothouse Flowers made a name for itself during the late '80s and early '90s with a passionate, bombastic fusion of rock & roll with the rootsy sounds of Irish folk and American gospel.
The group was founded as a Dublin street-performance act called the Incomparable Benzini Brothers by schoolmates Liam O'Maonlai (vocals, keyboards) and Fiachna O'Broainain (guitar), the former of whom had played in My Bloody Valentine forerunner Congress.
Hothouse Flowers has been quiet since 1993; several members have guested on other artists' albums.

Splendid Magazine reviews Hothouse Flowers: Into Your Heart
From busking in the streets of their native Dublin to opening slots on megaconcerts with dinosaur rockers like Dire Straits, to writing heartfelt, delicate songs about riding the always sedate Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, it's been a strange journey for Hothouse Flowers, who've resurfaced with their solid and jubilant songwriting talent intact.
Into Your Heart is the second installment of a comeback initiated in 1998, after the alarmingly long period of quiescence that followed the group's late-eighties heyday.
A substantial part of the empathy Hothouse Flowers elicit probably comes from this aura of earnest artistes who almost made it; taking years in between albums surely sabotaged their chances of capitalizing on the success of their early singles.
