Though traditional Japanese haiku is my basis, I have come to know many haiku poets of other schools as well when I started to be involved in the international haiku movement (I know over 300 haijin in Japan alone, and a larger number in the rest of the world).
It is a good practice to start one's learning of haiku with the Hototogisu School with all its strict rules and conventions, in the same way as art students start off with disciplined drawings and study of old masters, or aspiring musicians to begin with Bach or earlier music.
Having said that, there are inevitably limitations in the approach of the Hototogisu School in terms of poetic expression, especially in terms of the subject matter.

but hototogisu has been screaming downhill ever since the first cdr, which was amazing.
I haven't heard so much of the Hototogisu stuff (not even sure what the first cd-r is!) but I love the blasting high end drone with Marcia Bassett filling in the deep spaces.

One of my favourites…."When the nightingale won't sing" is about the different characters you will meet in your dojo, which he likens to 3 of the famous military characters of feudal Japan: Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nobunaga Oda and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Lowry uses a poem about them and a hototogisu [nightingale] to illustrate the 3 characters.

I said of course and told the famous story of how she sat meditating all night on the theme "hototogisu" assigned by her haiku master until dawn came and she heard the cuckoo (hototogisu is often translated as nightingale but is in fact a species of cuckoo).
Completely open to the moment, she has like this glimpse of enlightenment and writes "repeating /hototogisu, hototogisu --/ day dawned" a haiku totally without artifice or comment an "enlightenment" haiku.
So, like the first page I turn to in the book explains that the hototogisu story is not true.
