These Four Early Histories are in turn part of the larger canon of Chinese histories known as the Twenty-Four Histories.
Fan Ye used a number of earlier histories, including the Shiji by Sima Qian and the Hanshu by Ban Gu, plus many others (including some that were also entitled Hou Hanshu), most of which have not survived intact.

In both the Hanshu and the Hou Hanshu the main city of the Da Yuezhi (and, by this time they had presumably established themselves to the south of the Oxus), is described as a ju.
However, in both the Hanshu and theH Hou Hanshu there is no mention that this town is the residence of the wang or ‘king’ of the Yuezhi.
Hanshu as a very small settlement of only 1,030 pastoral nomads and adds that “in company with their stock animals they go after water and pasture”.

The Hou Hanshu, the official history of the Later (or ‘Eastern’) Han Dynasty (25-221 CE), was compiled by Fan Ye, who died in 445 CE.
Thus, in the Hou Hanshu, we find references to the ‘King of Da Qin’ (that is, the king of Rome) and, at the same time, subject territories such as Egypt, or the ‘Roman Orient,’ are also referred to simply as Da Qin.
The basic units of measurement employed in the Hou Hanshu, the 里 li and the 尺 chi, have varied considerably through the ages and, at times, from district to district.

According to the Hou Hanshu: "the prince (xihou) of Guishuang (Badakhshan and the adjoining territories north of the Oxus), named Kujula Kadphises (Ch:丘就却, "Qiujiuque") attacked and exterminated the four other princes (xihou).
The Chinese Historical Chronicle of the Hou Hanshu also describes the exchange of goods between northwestern India and the Roman Empire at that time: "To the west (Tiazhu, northwestern india) communicates with Da Qin (the Roman Empire).

Chapter 96A of the Hanshu or 'History of the Former Han' (which cover the period says the period from 125 BCE to 23 CE says that Yutian, or Khotan, had 3,300 households, 19,300 individuals and 2,400 people able to bear arms.

The Hou Han Shu, the official history of the Latter or Eastern Han Dynasty, 25-220 CE, was compiled in the fifth century by Fan Ye but is based on earlier records.
In particular, note the changes made after the original draft was circulated in 2000 regarding the identification of a number of towns in Parthian territory which has led to a completely revised itinerary for the travels of the Chinese envoy Gan Ying in 97 CE.

The pattern of Sima Qian's historiographic work was unique and should serve as model for the official standard histories of the imperial dynasties for the next two thousand years.
The Hanshu, written by Ban Biao 班彪 and his son Ban Gu 班固, a historian who also took part in the compilation of the political compendium Baihutong 白虎通 and the history Dongguan Hanji 東觀漢記, helped to standardize the style of the official dynastic histories that has been established with the Shiji.
Like Sima Qian, Ban Gu used the biographical-thematical style with four different types of chapters.
