At Right, is a handsome young male Houdan that has now molted out all of the solid white juvenile plumage, and shows appropriate mottling relative to his age (although his crest and hackle may still look a bit scant, as the mottled feathers continue to grow and fill in).

 Breed of the Month
Originally the Houdan was a breed kept by many local farmers living in the vicinity of the market town Houdan, near Paris.
A Bantam version of the Houdan was developed in England during the Second World War when the acute shortage of grain and corresponding urgent need for eggs and meat necessitated small, economic livestock.
We have found the Houdan to have an extremely docile nature, and if obtained whilst still very young, will give young children a great deal of pleasure as they are great pets and seem to enjoy the attention.

With much the same history as the Crevecoeur and hailing also from France, the Houdan is a very popular breed for exhibition but has lost much support in the general poultry world.
As with many breeds, production is what drives much of the poultry industry and although the Houdan will lay approximately 150 white eggs per year, they cannot compete with the Hybred commercial breeds such as the Leghorn.
With their magnificent crests and beards and striking fl colour, mottled all over with white, they are quite a sight to see!

OLD FRENCH BREEDS: HOUDANS AND CREVECOEURS
The Crevecoeur and Houdans are usually grouped collectively with the La Fleche as the oldest breeds of French origin.
A number of poultry historians have speculated that the Crevecour is actually the oldest member of the group, and that it figured prominently in the development of the La Fleche and Houdan.
The Black and the Blue Mottled varieties of Houdan may have contained a touch of Crevecoeur blood but were largely of pure French blood, if not quite of pure Houdan breeding.

About the Faverolles Fanciers of America
Cornevin says that it is form by crosses between the Dorking and the Cochin, or the Houdan with the Cochin and Langshan.
When the great feathered races of Cochins and Brahmas, and also Dorkings appeared, the infatuation for those fine-looking birds were excessive, and cocks were used of these breeds to cross with the common fowl, particularly with that of Houdan.
To the Dorking and Houdan influences may be attributed the white flesh and legs and the fifth toe; to the Creve and Houdan the whiskers and beard; to the Brahma the feathering on the legs and the dark-shelled eggs.
