In the News (Mon 4 Jun 12)

The Dreaming (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album may be seen not so much as an extension of the innovations that could be heard on Never for Ever, but rather as an experiment in new (and frequently scary) musical sounds and textures.
The album cover depicts a scene described in the lyrics to the the song "Houdini".
In the picture shown, Bush is acting as Houdini's wife, holding a key in her mouth which she is about to pass on to Houdini.

Houdini is no longer available for adoption because he is an accomplished escape artist.
We were called to rescue Houdini when he was found scratching at an apartment door in the middle of the night.

Singing the lead vocal was a matter of conjuring up that feeling again and as the clock whirrs and the song flashes back in time to when she watched him through the glass, he's on the other side under water, and she hangs on to his every breath.
And he found a lot them to be phoney, but before he died Houdini and his wife worked out a code, so that if he came back after his death his wife would know it was him by the code.
So she went to see him, and he gave her the code that only Houdini and her had known and as far as she was concerned he had made contact with her.

The Melvin’s new live album is part of a different branch of this trend, where bands return to their own work and rearticulate their original intentions with new recordings.
Frank Zappa’s extensive live albums (most of which, of course, are fraught with overdubbing) often see his various bands completely rearranging a wide variety of his songs.
The album was the Melvin’s major label debut, produced by Kurt Cobain (who reportedly slept through most of the sessions), and saw the band honing their rougher tendencies with the studio time afforded by this circumstance.

The Melvins have abandoned almost all of their usual heaviness on this album, instead rooting for their self-stylised ‘dirge rock’ and weirdness, that keeps this album feeling fresh and different each time it’s heard.
The album’s opener, the only new song on the album, *** Storm, is a prime example of their wierdness.

Houdini's Last Illusion is an A5 paperback novella, written by a Geordie school teacher who has been living in Sweden for the past eight years.
Houdini's Last Illusion does a fine job of capturing the man's mystique, as well as the subtle amusement he felt when he was able to fool large crowds, and up close, beguile all manner of experts.
This Houdini is a man who is already seventeen years dead, but who somehow managed to cheat the Grim Reaper.

There is a conventional wisdom that live albums are incapable of being as good as anything done in a studio (with the exception of Nomeansno’s “Live And Cuddly,” the first ever perfect live album).
However, with the release of “Houdini Live 2005,” the Melvins break this long-standing rule, putting together a fantastically brilliant live document of their All Tomorrow’s Parties performance, as per the request of the curators (who asked other bands to perform full albums as well).
Given their two other forays into the Live Album Arena were not as memorable, it’s good to have one by a band that has consistently blown my mind on the stage.

The high point of this 11-track album comes at the halfway mark with "Houdini and Cecilia," which is about the famed magician's obsession with his mother and his attempts to contact her in the afterlife.

Tiny Mix Tapes Music Reviews: Melvins Music Review
During the peak of the grunge era, the Melvins came out with their "pop album," Houdini, an album that introduced jaded flannel flyers to the slow, fast, avant-garde, metal, and in-between moods that had thus far marked the Melvins' career.
Although the album was distributed by Warner Brothers and produced by Kurt Cobain, it failed to make a dent anywhere save for the pages of your favorite rock magazine.
The curators of the series hand-picked bands to perform their "classic albums." One may never know why the curators chose The Melvins' Houdini as the representative "classic" album from the band, but the results of the performance are brave and, dare I say, better than the original album.

The early to mid-'90s proved the Melvins' golden age, and the three principal albums from that period -- Stoner Witch provides the centerpiece -- are virtually unassailable in their range, depth, power, and experimental courage.
Picking up on the basic framework of Houdini, Stoner Witch resolves into an ear-catching workup of classic rock themes, tempered, of course, with a fairly judicious sampling of acid-trip detours.
Where Houdini resided more in an expansive -- though lugubriously heavy -- metal vein, refining the techniques built up through the band's early struggles, Stoner Witch truly showcases the band at the apex of their wide-ranging creative abilities.

"Houdini" rises and falls gently on swelling waves of chiming guitars; "High Scores" sounds a bit like middle-period R.E.M., complete with unintelligible lyrics; "Flat End of the Earth" is a sprawling, largely instrumental composition that frankly could have used a little tightening up.
It sounds a bit like the Life and Times are still figuring out exactly what they want to do, but that's natural.

The long and short of it is this is the Melvins 1993 ‘Houdini’ album performed live in its entirety.

It's fairly apparent Oakenfold isn't trying to convert his critics with this album; he's giving his fans what they want, and that's in-your-face, adrenaline-inducing progressive trance.
Most of the tracks here are collaborations with Andy Gray, with Oakenfold doing none of the production or remixing work on his own.
Besides the "Planet Rock" remix, a remix of NERD's "Lapdance" is notable, but in the end, nothing here is that exceptional besides "Get Out of My Life" and "Unafraid," two vocal tunes that integrate a conventional pop song template.
