Houghton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and largest city in the Copper Country on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Houghton is named after Douglass Houghton, discoverer of copper nearby (though there is evidence indigenous peoples had mined copper in the area thousands of years before).
Houghton was the birthplace of professional ice hockey in the United States when the Portage Lakers were formed in 1899.

However cute Houghton thought he was by making his little statement, he showed pure ignorance of, or disregard for, two overriding facts: the need for Interstate-level roadways in South Texas is very real indeed, and Houghton’s influence isn’t strong enough to simply declare such a necessary project dead.
Houghton certainly isn’t the first person to shun the Rio Grande Valley; it’s the last major metropolitan area in the country that hasn’t been connected to the interstate highway system that was created half a century ago.
Ted Houghton might be out killing fairies, but he can’t kill the need for improved transportation, or a growing coalition of officials who know better.

In the 2003-’04 election cycle, the Kuhl for Congress campaign received $4,000 from Houghton; $4,000 from Houghton’s brother James, who succeeded him as CEO of Corning; and $5,500 from the Corning Inc. Employees PAC.
He pointed out that the bypass was the first public works project championed by Houghton when he arrived in Congress, and it has cut down on traffic accidents and congestion considerably.
