 Houghton-le-Spring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gilpin was Archdeacon of Durham and in 1557 became the rector at Houghton-le-Spring, which at that time was one of the largest parishes in England.
In 1311 the village was owned by Albreda widow of Lord Henry Spring, hence the addition of 'le spring'.
The name Houghton (pronounced Horton, or Ho-ton) comes from the Old English hoh meaning hill and tun meaning settlement.

Houghton le Spring, is a former mining town in the borough of Sunderland, four miles to the east of Lumley and Chester le Street.
The history of Houghton le Spring is centred around the attractive Norman church of St Michael and All Angels, within which we find the tomb of Bernard Gilpin (1517-1583), who was known as `the Apostle of the North'.
Liulf was killed in the eleventh century by one of William Walcher's men in an incident that led to that Bishop's murder at Gateshead in 1081.

Houghton Hillside Cemetery, as it is known locally, was consecrated in 1854 among a flood of controversy.

"The manor of Houghton was anciently held by the Le Spring family, from whom its additional designation was derived.
"The town of Houghton-le-Spring is situated at the head of a beautiful vale, opening to the west, and sheltered from northern and eastern winds by the hills of Houghton and Wardenlaw.
The last male heir of this family was murdered in his own manor-house by Robert Lascelles; soon after which Ralph, Lord Neville of Raby, was excommunicated by Bishop Kellaw, 1313, for seizing and retaining the armour of the murdered Sir John Spring.

 Pensioners from the Houghton
Pensioners from around the Houghton area put up a stall on Newbottle Street, Houghton-le-Spring, on Saturday 6th October, and petitioned the public for support of the Health Action Day.
The stall was busy as thousands of visitors flocked to Houghton-le-Spring that day, for the annual Houghton Feast Parade, the start of a month-long series of events built around the Houghton Feast celebrations.
A Health Action Day Rally and Lobby of Parliament on November 6, 2001 has been organised by the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) and aims to highlight the wide range of issues which affect the care of older people.

Houghton was a pleasant old-world village when it was visited by the pioneers, and the cause there was of little account compared with those at the Raintons, Shiney Row, and adjacent villages.
From not having a suitable place, the society at Houghton was much crippled for many years; but a building was got in 1855, when Joseph Dixon was at the front, and in the early seventies a substantial church was built, since which time extensive additions have been made to it.
John Phillipson was superintendent when the division took place, and he went with the Houghton people, George F. Johnson becoming superintendent of the parent circuit.

The addition ‘le spring’ comes from it being held in 1311 by Albreda, the widow of Lord Henry Spring, rather than it describing the settlement as being by a spring, although that has led to misunderstandings because being beside a spring became a more fashionable interpretation in the 19th century.
To the north-west are Houghton Tile Sheds, and Flint Mill further west.
The 1856 map shows Houghton Colliery, on the terminus of the Houghton Branch of the Lambton Railway.

 Houghton Keiper School Track
On the 1994 A-Z the area is shown as Houghton Kepier School but their only campus now is on Dairy Lane, DH4 5BH which is on the other side of the A690 dual carriageway although according to that A-Z they were also then occupying the Diary Lane site as well.
On the new A-Z, the area is now shown to be Bernard Galpin Primary School and it appears that the old school buildings on Hall Lane were demolished and a new one built over the track.
The track was the venue of North East Counties/Durham Schools championships in the late 1960s & early 1970s and is shown on an 1972 OS map.
