  The Legendary Hound tor
The tor is an example of one of Dartmoor's 'avenue tors' as it consists of two separate rock masses which lie on a north-westerly alignment.
Hound tor was another of Dartmoor's eminences that was regarded by early antiquarians such as Borlase as being a ritual site where the Druids held their pagan ceremonies.
Hound tor also has the distinction of being one of the thirteen tors which the Scattor Rock Brewery has named their ales after.

 Crockern Tor
Crockern tor is more a place of history than mystery, probably of all the granite outcrops on Dartmoor this one embodies the traditions of the area.
The tor is said to be the home of the ancient pagan God of Dartmoor - Old Crockern.
The actual tor stands at 1,300ft (396m) and is made up of two rock piles, the north-eastern one forms a huge, weathered rock-ridge and the south-western outcrop describes a large, natural amphitheatre and was known as Parliament rock.

 10 Tors from Haytor CP
This walk was led by Dave Pawley on 17th March 02 and he had graded it as moderate to strenuous and in the prevailing weather conditions this is certainly proved to be for the 15 walkers who arrived to embark on the walk with a forecast of strong winds and heavy rain.
Unfortunately as we left Top Tor we could see the weather closing in on the other side of the valley and within minutes we were in heavy rain; this was to continue on and off for the rest of the day.
Chinkwell Tor was at a local high point and from this Tor on a bearing of 350 degrees we went down and up again towards a widely scattered outcrop of rocks called Honeybag Tor (no 7), my planned lunchstop for the day.

Hound Tor is certainly worth a visit and up until recently had a "Logan Stone" perched precariously on top, but this was destroyed by vandals who managed to unbalance it.
If you drive out of Hound Tor car park and turn right towards North Bovey, you will see the grave after about a quarter of a mile on the left hand side of the road on a right hand bend.
This is a strange rock figure about half a mile from Hound Tor believed to be the petrified remains of Bowerman the Hunter, who is supposed to have upset the witches of Dartmoor by driving his pack through one of their secret moorland gatherings.

Take the path up to Shilley Pool, cross the brook (which may not be easy) and head NW up the ridge to Cheriton Combe head and an impressive stone row.
This was built in 1834 by a local who hoped that it would become one of the tors of the original Dartmoor forest boundary.

We stopped briefly to admire Hound Tor and then descended north west to Swallerton Gate CP, used by many people as the car park to use for the walk up to Hound Tor.
Brenda smiled as she explained that we had a short uphill section to the top of the Tor where we would be taking lunch.
We decided to give Rippon Tor a miss on this walk and headed on a bearing of 120 degrees down to the road by Hemsworthy Gate, along the side of the road to another car park then swung more north up a 100 ft ascent to Saddle Tor.

 Circular Walk from Swallerton Gate CP
At the top there were excellent views down into the valley and back across to Hound Tor were we had been 45 minutes before.
The three routes are indicated on the outline map as A,B and C at the top of the description of the walk.
Depending on which of the routes are taken through Hound Tor woods the Walk can vary in length from just over 8.5 miles to just under 11 miles.
