Hounds of Tindalos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hounds of Tindalos dwell in the distant past of the earth, when normal life had not yet advanced past one-celled animals.
Though the Hounds are sometimes pictured as canine, probably because of the evocative name of the first story in which they appeared, it is not likely that they appear as such.
Tindalos, as it is referred to, is depicted as resembling the rotting corpse of a giant, skinned dog, and is of a very different origin from the mythos Hounds.

These included: "The Hounds of Tindalos" (the first Mythos story written by anyone other than Lovecraft), The Horror from the Hills (which introduced the elephantine Great Old One Chaugnar Faugn to the Mythos), and "The Space-Eaters" (featuring a fictionalized HPL as its main character).
The Hounds were a pack of foul and incomprehensibly alien beasts "emerging from strange angles in dim recesses of non-Euclidean space before the dawn of time" (Long) to pursue travelers down the corridors of time.
Long's Hounds of Tindalos have also inspired a number of metal and electronic music artists, such as: Epoch of Unlight, Edith Byron's Group, Beowulf, Fireaxe/Brian Voth, and Univers Zero, all of whom have recorded tracks based upon the story.

Some thirty five years before the drug-experimentation waves of the 1960s, Frank Long wrote "The Hounds of Tindalos", in which a researcher takes consciousness-expanding drugs and inadvertently unleashes rabid creatures, the Hounds of Tindalos, from the fourth dimension.
Though owing something to H.P. Lovecraft’s "From Beyond," "The Hounds of Tindalos" touched areas of cosmic terror which were previously unexplored.
Here the invasion of an outside alien agency is discovered to actually be perpetrated by the individual human beings themselves, buried in their subconscious, which was given power to emerge from the psychiatric patients’ minds through similar consciousness expanding experimentation that Long used in "The Hounds of Tindalos".

This is why the hounds don't bother the Yithians and other time travellers, because the Great Race have no connection with the Tesseract Factories of Tindalos, whereas humans (and their warped perception of reality) are linked to the ETHOS that eventually creates Tindalos.
It could also be that the Great Race avoids the Hounds by travelling forwards in time and avoiding their relative past.
