Hourglass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Factors affecting the amount of time that the hourglass measures include: the volume of sand, the size and angle of the bulbs, the width of the neck, and the type and quality of the sand.
Since the hourglass was one of the few reliable methods of measuring time at sea, it has been speculated that it was in use as far back as the 11th century, where it would have complimented the magnetic compass as an aid to navigation.
The hourglass was often depicted on pirate flags where it symbolised the fact that human existence is fleeting, and in England hourglasses were sometimes placed in coffins to symbolise the fact that the "sands of time" had run out.

This debut album by the young English folk singer Kate Rusby comes across the water with enormous hype behind it, so one's first impulse is to listen with a little cynicism.
While this is a wonderful debut album from one of the greats on the folk music scene today, I really must tip that her anniversary album "10" reprises the better half of this album with notable improvement to every track, rendering it somewhat irrelevant.
"10" is really the album anyone should start with (it also reprises half of her second album, "Sleepless", as well as adding a few more indispensibles) and after that, her latest, "Under the Stars".

Time may have the most unimaginative song-title on the album, but is hotel-bar retro-chic picture perfect in its assimilation of 80's synth parts, Streetsounds beatboxes, and Gallic House.
Despite the late-nite radio specialist-spot cool, Hourglass has enough tuneability to rub Pop shoulders with the freshest R 'n' B sensation from Virginia Beach, or the latest guitar slingin' sensations from New York, Glasgow or the Home Counties.

This is a surprising new album by James Taylor, for it appears the "main man of mellow" is allowing himself some intriguing amounts of latitude in terms of both style and substance.
The album is uneven in the sense that it is more a collection of songs that are unrelated to each other than is his usual fare, but it is an interesting and satisfying mix of different styles and substances here.

Hourglass by James Taylor Super-Audio CD
HOURGLASS won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Album and for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
James Taylor is the godfather of the sensitive singer-songwriter movement of the '70s that clogged the charts with introspective folk-rock ballads and kept scores of troubadour manques up to their well-studied navels in champagne and caviar.
HOURGLASS more or less follows the path of the last several Taylor releases: precisely articulated, carefully constructed songs that favor soft, muted colors over anything too brash or aggressive; and sinuous, literary songs delivered in Taylor's smooth, relaxed croon.

In fact, the production of the album as a whole tends towards simple understatement, leaving plenty of room for rocking out when the songs are played live.
There is plenty of variation among the sixteen tracks, which the band's website describes as a "tasty musical stew." "7 in a box" opens strongly with a bluesy guitar floating over a crazy 7/4 riff that defies categorization.
Overall, Hourglass is a decent album, but with 16 tracks, it wouldn't have suffered if one or two of the weaker songs had been dropped.

An earlier record with Kathryn Roberts had been voted Best New Album of 1995 in the prestigious Folk Roots annual poll.
Much of the material is wholly or partially traditional, including the opening "Sir Eglamore" and a fine "Annan Waters." Rusby's own "A Rose in April" is very much in the tradition.

Each subsequent release was pleasing to listen to, but the albums also didn't stray far from the original seeds he had planted.
His tunes still ride upon the graceful melodies crooned in his soothing voice, and his lyrics remain firmly entrenched in a state of quiet introspection.
Consequently, this is Taylor's best album in years, and while it doesn't break any new ground, it also won't disappoint fans of his early classic albums.
