Hours (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hours is the second album by the post-hardcore band Funeral for a Friend.
The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Terry Date, with co-production by the band.
Hours is notable for finding Funeral for a Friend showcase its more melodic side, as there is noticeably less screaming on the album as a whole.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : "Hours..."   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Undoubtedly there are going to be people who try to decipher the words of this album and try to figure out what story Bowie was trying to tell about his life.
I'd rather let the songs stand on their own merits and appreciate them as they are, not for what they're construed to mean.
Still, 'hours...' is a surprisingly good album, even if you've been underwhelmed with some of Bowie's recent work.

 Hours... by David Bowie CD
And although this album has an ambient feel and contains its share of loops and programming, it is organic overall.
HOURS manages to be cutting edge and personal at the same time.
The subdued feel of HOURS shows a classic rocker who is at ease and introspective.

Waking Hours - Japancakes - Song Listings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
It's not that the album is a massive step forward or attempts any radical changes to the band's formula; instead, it distills the best things about their sound into something subtler but still very appealing.
The dreaded term "soundscapes" could be used to describe the album and its songs, but only in the best possible sense; Waking Hours washes over listeners, allowing them to pay as much attention as they want to their dreamy surroundings.
Though this might be the first Japancakes album that could be invited to a dinner party, close listening to the gorgeous interplay of pedal steel and violins throughout Waking Hours -- and particularly on the delicately warm "Tremor" -- as well as its other lovely details really pays off.

David Bowie - 'hours...' (Album Review)
It wasn’t until ‘hours...’, his final outing before the turn of the millennium, that the facade fully faded from view, leaving behind a man who never was more completely himself.
As if to emphasize the disconnection between souls that has come hand-in-hand with the digital revolution, each homage was suitably updated with a myriad of frittering electronic flourishes that imitated the blips and beeps of an increasingly computerized world.
The recent reissue tacks on a pair of re-mixed album tracks (Something in the Air and Survive), a demo rendition of Seven, the version of The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell that appeared in the film Stigmata, and the sturdy, U.K.-only B-side We All Go Through.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Album Review: ...hours by David Bowie
...hours brings the futuristic pulse of his last few albums to a screeching halt, pushing back with retro riffs and a painful amount of awkward nostalgia.
The continued use of synthesizers in such a mix seems like contrived "coolness." The lack of interest or elegance apparent in song after song of faded love and introspection reduces Bowie's renowned musical and lyrical ferocity to tired (and tiresome) whining.
The album's simplicity and repetitiveness will give you Bowie-brain for days, but unless you're a true Bowie-head, don't give...hours the time.

Funeral For A Friend - Hours : album review
Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation has been replaced by the altogether curter Hours, while the wordy and often witty song titles (She Drove Me To Daytime Television being my personal favourite) have been similarly rejected in favour of the more conventional Hospitality, Drive, Monsters and History.
It's a bit too sweet to be Nine Inch Nails but the moody keyboard chords and guitar touches, plus the way the instrumentation fills out after a couple of minutes, all conspire to give it a darkly contemplative air.
Hours is a mixed bag then, one that reminds us of the heady heights that this lot are capable of climbing to, but that also shows a few cracks under the pressure of being your major record label's new priority act.

SECTION 3 - david bowie "hours..."
This latest Bowie album isn't as easy to swallow as previous album, but it showcases Bowie's songwriting talents, and will definitely win you over in a few listens.
I wrote it after listening to the album only twice, and after I was hyped up to hear more songs like "I'm Afraid of Americans." Upon first listen I thought it was a disappointment as a Bowie fan.
This album is much more mellow and thought-provoking than his recent efforts.

 Funeral For A Friend
The release of Funeral for A Friends sophomore album “Hours” in July was the bands first proper album, as the last album ‘Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation’ was considered with indulgent affection, but ultimately considered its collection of songs from throughout their career to date, a disjointed set of old favorites and newer material.
The theme of the album is that confidence allows you to grow as a person.
This album is less screamy and the band even recorded a few ballads such as "Sonny".

David Bowie: hours... ---Ink Blot Magazine
After his next album, Station to Station, stardom began to take its toll, and a drugged- and freaked-out Bowie retreated to Berlin in 1977 to record three albums with Brian Eno.
If you're new to Bowie, this album is a painless, low-impact view of his vocal idiosyncrasies and fine songwriting.
The result is an album which, though well-made and interesting, is not particularly striking.

Eyeball Kid - The Open - Silent Hours - Album Review
This is the eagerly awaited debut of Scouse five-piece The Open, a band who have made it clear that they are apart from the burgeoning new Merseybeat scene of The Coral, The Stands and The Zutons.
A good deal of ‘The Silent Hours’ trundles past with the kind of creative vacuum that me and some friends once displayed many moons ago in our uni band before we realised we would make better doctors (Neil, drums), teachers (Graham, bass), and stuntmen/spies (me, misunderstood guitar and vocals).
However, another sizable portion of the album is given over to the kind of soaring, superior, gliding-on-thermals indie rock that the Doves would have produced if they hadn’t sounded so bored.

The Hours: (Philip Glass) The highly acclaimed translation of Michael Cunningham's novel to the big screen has been more successful than anyone could have predicted, with the superb acting performances in the film catapulting it to the forefront of popular and critical attention entering a generous awards season for the picture.
Be aware that the piano performances in the film are different than those on the album; in the film, David Arch performs, and on album, Michael Riesman performs and produces.
On album, The Hours provides a solid and relaxing hour of harmonious and crisp classical performances without even so much as a single note that could wake up a person sleeping in the next room.

John Howard - The Dangerous Hours : album review
Delightful as it has been to wallow in John Howard's musical past, 30 years after the original release of Kid In A Big World we have a recording that not only reflects the current artist, but shows that the best is perhaps still to come.
You might perhaps expect a singer-songwriter to sound different when the words aren't his own, but the partnership here is seamless - and the mixture of the charming and the melancholy in the songs adds up to a delightful whole.
Such A Drag and Dear Glitterheart are more in the style of earlier albums, the latter in particular taking us back to the good old days of David Bowie selling the world in a dress, Howard's voice winding up the melodrama as only he can do and even providing his own backing oohs and ahs.

The chorus is almost stadium sized, and the song starts the album off on a cracking note.

Although The Silent Hours has its moments, The Open don't yet possess anything to suggest that they can successfully stand out from their contemporaries.

Sarah Vaughan : The Lonely Hours - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The Lonely Hours, Sarah Vaughan's contribution to the genre of saloon song LPs, doesn't have a stellar selection of material -- although of course nearly anything recorded by one of America's foremost jazz interpreters is worth hearing.
Carter's refined arrangements and ensemble playing don't exactly reinforce the isolation of the title, but Vaughan sounds excellent on "I'll Never Be the Same," "These Foolish Things," and "If I Had You," lightly caressing the notes.
Hopefully, Carter wasn't responsible for the occasionally canned sound of the strings; The Lonely Hours is a solid match of vocalist and arranger in most respects, with only the quality of the material weighing it down slightly.
