  House Corrino - Definition, explanation
House Corrino is a ruling family in the fictional Dune universe of Frank Herbert.
Members of this Imperial House ruled as Emperors of the Known Universe from the time of the Butlerian Jihad until the defeat of the 81st Emperor of House Corrino, Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, by "Muad'dib" (Paul Atreides) and the Fremen approximately 10,000 years later.
The harsh conditions of their homeworld encouraged the survival of the strong, and allowed the Corrinos to develop the universe's most-feared military units, the warrior-fanatic Sardaukar, the means by which House Corrino controlled the Empire.

dragonsworn [book review] - House Corrino, Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson
Spanning the barren deserts of Arrakis, the subterranean caverns of Ix, the oceans of Caladan, the splendor of Kaitain, and even the forbidden Spacing Guild planet of Junction, 'House Corrino' is an ambitious novel which encompasses the entire universe of Dune.
As with the earlier novels, 'House Corrino' is devoid of any real character development, making it difficult for the reader to establish any emotional connections with any of the protagonists, or even antagonists for that matter.
House Corrino manages to entertain without stumbling under the weight of requirements which oft times plague prequels.

Soon after the apparent defeat of House Atreides, it’s new Duke, Paul Atreides, establishes a formal union between the Fremen and the Atreides, with which he further unites the tribal Fremen people of Arrakis, and wages war against their common enemy, House Harkonnen, and eventually against the Imperial House Corrino itself.
In fact, the House Troopers gained such a reputation in the time before the move to Arrakis, that it was said their fighting level approached within a hairs width of that of the Imperial Sardaukar.
Lastly, the alliance with House Corrino (and ammunition, equipment and transportation costs completely covered by House Harkonnen’s coffers) has allowed House Harkonnen to enjoy the benefit of a token amount of Sardaukar reinforcements in their infantry corps, since the movement of House Atreides to Arrakis.

It is used on location in the planets Arrakis and Caladan (current and previous fiefs of the House), and appears also in Paul's recurrent visions of a potential future arrakeen jihad made in his name.

Secondly, the House Atreides is in a position where it could potentially undermine the fundamental source of Corrino power: The Corrinos' power base is their military strength, their specially trained army--the " Sardaukar "--who per soldier are five to ten times better fighters than the military forces of the other noble houses.
