House Harkonnen is, in many ways, the antithesis of all that House Atreides stands for.
The Harkonnens' deep hatred for the Atreides stems from the fact that Bashar Abulurd Harkonnen was banished for treachery by an Atreides after the Battle of Corrin.
When the political winds force House Corrino to side against the Atreides, the Baron is more than willing to spend his carefully guarded reserves of spice to pay for the passage of the legions of Sardaukar to Arrakis, as well as providing them with Harkonnen livery to hide the Padishah Emperor's part in the attack.

I had feared "House Harkonnen" for the simple reason that I did not see how the Baron could possibly serve in a full-length setting for a story.
Where this novel is most effective is outlining the breakdown of Imperium order, which sets the basis for the Atreides and Fremen conquest of the original series, and the origins of the Leto-Jessica romance.
Enjoy House Harkonnen for the mission that the authors have sought to follow, and not some impossible standard that no one could achieve.

Meanwhile, on Lankeviel, Vladimir's brother, and Rabban's father, is not being sufficiently evil, and is therefore an embarrassment to House Harkonnen.
It's difficult to believe that House Harkonnen is as powerful as it is, given their waste, repression and general incompetence.

House Harkonnen is book number two in the House trilogy by brian herbert and kevin j.
Harkonnen does provide some interesting back story on several characters, but falls short, in this reader's opinion, when it comes to providing true insight into character development and motivation.
the harkonnens seem mindlessly malevolent; some are stupid, some are smart, but they're mostly evil (aside from peace-minded abulurd harkonnen who winds up in utter ruin at the hands of beast rabban).
