House Of 1000 Corpses Region 1 DVD review, Rob Zombie
House Of 1000 Corpses certainly has moments of high camp and all the trad horror trappings - a creepy old lightning-lashed house, for instance - but I was unprepared for its intensity and most of all its disturbing qualities.
Special mention must also go to Sid Haig (a B-movie veteran with the likes of Spider Baby and Coffy under his belt) for his portrayal of Captain Spaulding, who manages to be hilarious and frightening at the same time.

After seeing "House Of 1000 Corpses" it is hardly surprising that this film had to go through some tribulations to get made and that various studios dropped the project before Lions Gate had the guts to finally bring it to fruition without adhering to the absolute "political correctness" attitude of major movie studios.

We heard the claims; House of 1000 Corpses was to reinvent the horror genre.
This is a film that is masterful in its tribute to the classics; Zombie's love of horror is exploited, his inspiration is seen, and he does not, for one second, try to hide his love for this genre - even his music is an incredibly entertaining array of horror stories.
Originally rated the dreaded NC-17, 1000 is said to have been heavily cut to receive the R rating, and for me, it was unnoticeable.

HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES - Movie Review
1000 CORPSES is a collection of scenes, each shot in a different style, that plays more like a feature reel (something a hopeful director would show to somebody in order to get a directing gig).
On top of that, there are sequences that lack any editing style -- which could be due to the fact that there were four editors on the film -- and is simply a vulgar waste of film.
Plus, I had the opportunity to read a screenplay he wrote called "The Crow 2030: An Age of Gods and Monsters." It was a brilliant screenplay, far superior to any of "The Crow" films since the original, and an outstanding genre story.

Flipside Movie Emporium: House of 1000 Corpses Movie Review
It's best to try to appreciate House of 1000 Corpses on its own terms, removed from the hype, for what it is: a campy tribute to gritty '70s horror and exploitation that struggles to find its own voice and occasionally uncovers it, but relies too heavily on echoes from the past.
Like Tobe Hooper's seminal masterpiece, House of 1000 Corpses (set in 1977 on Halloween Eve) follows four college-age kids as they pay the price for stumbling into a family of backwoods psychotics.
The scene in which she dances to the Commodores' "Brick House" while smiling, giggling, and helping Otis torture a young man with a razor blade is one of the few times House of 1000 Corpses truly springs to life.

House of 1000 Corpses Review (DVD Movie/Film)
The much-delayed horror extravaganza from cartoon metal superstar Rob Zombie finally graces our screens, virtually two years after original distributor Universal refused to release it for being ‘too extreme.’ What we get in fact is an amusing, sometimes inventive, horror pastiche that may induce the odd wince but is unlikely to trouble sleep too much.
Zombie’s film is a fast-moving, colourful horror that chews up and spits out pieces from the entire history of the genre, particularly the ‘nasties’ of the seventies such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ and ‘Last House on the Left’ (even the title is a likely homage to z-grade slasher ‘House of Seven Corpses’).
House of 1000 Corpses is an altogether nastier affair (witness the ‘fish-boy’!), and yet, after all the hype, some will be a little disappointed to find Corpses not nearly as blood-drenched as might be expected – mainly, you have to assume, due to cuts imposed on the picture by those darn censors.

Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) runs a carnival house of horrors in the middle of nowhere as a roadside attraction, and he knows how to handle himself: when a couple of would-be robbers drop by, they are quickly dispatched by the Captain and his two assistants.
Captain Spaulding's house of horrors is in the form of a ghost train, graphically outlining the careers of real-life murderers like Ed Gein and Albert Fish.
The trouble with House of 1000 Corpses isn't that there aren't 1000 corpses to be seen, because the film tries hard to be nasty, but that it's simply a mishmash of odds and ends, references to other, more potent benchmarks that have become part of the cultural landscape.

Classic-Horror Review of House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
With House of 1000 Corpses, rocker Rob Zombie set out to make his first film a balls-to-the-wall, insanely over-the-top splatter fest of depravity and, despite the best efforts of Universal, MGM and the Motion Picture Association of America, he did just that.
The good Captain (Sid Haig) is nice enough to draw the doomed travelers a map to Doc Satan's hanging tree, and all hell predictably breaks loose when they pick up bumpkin hitchhiker Sheri Moon and end up at the house of her cannibalistic, satanic and generally psychotic family.
Despite Zombie's reverence for the genre and calculated attempts to craft House of 1000 Corpses in the image of the 1970s splatter fests he so loves, the movie never approaches the fright or campy fun of the films it wishes to emulate.

Besides, I think in following the lead of Tobe Hooper's classic splatter flick that "House of 1,000 Corpses" improves on the weakest part of the original, which is when Leatherface's family sits down for dinner.
"House of 1000 corpses" was not making the huge entrance into the media that it deserved and this instant horror classic deserves to be just as well recognised as these other great horror films.

Plot Synopsis: In "House of 1000 Corpses", two young couples take a misguided tour onto the back roads of America in search of a local legend known as Dr. Satan.
Also notice how NO high-tech computer effects were used; because "House" is set in the rural American South in 1977, the makers intended to stay true to that period (not to mention achieve realistic gore without overspending the budget).
And of course the larger-than-life characters of "House of 1000 Corpses" are just as memorable as those in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." In fact, in the DVD's featurette, Sig Haig happily confessed how he would like to see this film presented in any tiny theatre where audiences can yell back at the screen!
