  Courtenay - LoveToKnow 1911
It is also notable that the English Courtenays have, from the first introduction of armorial bearings, borne with various differences the three red roundels in a golden field, the arms of the Courtenays in France, the shield of the earls of Devonshire being identical with that of the lords of La Ferte Loupiere.
Their eldest son, Sir Hugh de Courtenay, shared in the honours of Crecy and Calais, and was one of the knights founders of the order of the Garter, the stall-plate of his arms being yet in St George's chapel at Windsor.
William, a younger son of the match of Courtenay and Bohun, was bishop of Hereford in 1370, bishop of London in 1 375 and archbishop of Canterbury in 1381.

Digression of the Family of Courtenay
From the reign of Robert, the son of Hugh Capet, the barons of Courtenay are conspicuous among the immediate vassals of the crown; and Joscelin, the grandson of Athon and a noble dame, is enrolled among the heroes of the first crusade.
The barons of Courtenay must have stood high in their own estimation, and in that of the world, since they could impose on the son of a king the obligation of adopting for himself and all his descendants the name and arms of their daughter and his wife.
According to the old register of Ford Abbey, the Courtenays of Devonshire are descended from Prince Florus, the second son of Peter, and the grandson of Louis the Fat.

The house consists of two wings with a central block, enclosing a stone flagged courtyard, and is of distinctive architecture with its fine sharp pointed gables and Ipswich-style lattice windows.
The east wing of the house certainly dates from the late 11th Century and it was there that Queen Matilda, wife of King Henry I, gave birth to their daughter - later to become the Empress Matilda - whilst attended by Abbot Faricius of Abingdon, a great physician of his day.
The house remained in the property of the Cravens until 1821, when it was bought by William Monk.

House of Courtenay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The House of Courtenay was an important dynasty in medieval France.
That the Bourbon monarchs confined the French royalty to the descendants of Louis IX is evidenced by the Treaty of Montmartre (1662) which named the non-Capetian House of Lorraine as the next in line to the French throne after the Bourbons, thus bypassing the Courtenay, a Capetian family.
The last male member of the French Courtenays committed suicide in 1727, but his sister married the Marquis de Bauffremont, and her descendants assumed the dubious title of Prince de Courtenay, which they bear to this day.

The Courtenay Family in Ireland part 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The story of the Courtenay family in Ireland begins with Richard Courtenay, of Aughagallan, county Antrim, who came to Ireland during the reign of James I, while Sir Arthur Chichester, First Earl of Donegal, was Lord Lieutenant.
Richard Courtenay could have been born at Powderham; however it is more likely that he was from a junior branch of the family in Devonshire.
Perhaps Richard Courtenay married a daughter of this Sir James MacDonnell, or perhaps he married one of the daughters of Sorley Boy MacDonnell, Sir Randal's father and the original grantee of the Antrim lands.

It is interesting, in view of his patronage of Richard Courtenay, that Sir Arthur Chichester was said to have been not sufficiently zealous in enforcing the penal laws against the Roman Catholics to please the Court.
