House of Flying Daggers is not a film to displace Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and it's probably not worthy of the huge critical accolades that Hero got stateside—even though it possesses much more palatable politics than the "imperialism rules" dogma of Zhang Yimou's previous film.

So far I’ve not been a huge fan of Ziyi Zhang but I have to admit that she is breathtaking in "House Of Flying Daggers." Her portrayal of Mei is deep, emotional, surprising, honest, and powerful.

'House of Flying Daggers' deals with the fairly standard themes of its genre -- loyalty, honor, courage and romantic betrayal.
Though I can't say I've been converted to a fan of the genre by 'House of Flying Daggers,' my respect for films of its type has grown exponentially after having seen it.

The depth of House of Flying Daggers is easy to overlook when presented with Zhang's and DP Zhao Xiaoding's extraordinary cinematography (this is his fourteenth film, none except for this one known in the United States) and Tony Ching's fight choreography.
House of Flying Daggers is the sort of pure filmmaking one expects from Zhang Yimou, but it's also the kind of laden social commentary that his early work promised.

Indeed, 'House' is bookended by two scenes of staggering technical audacity which are mesmerising to watch but perhaps set one off in asking the wrong questions; certainly it is difficult to suspend disbelief whilst viewing them.
Whether your viewing of 'House of Flying Daggers' makes this a dumbfounding way in which to end your year or a confounding way in which to start the next one, what is certain is that this is a film you will be watching for many years to come.

Though markedly different in terms of tone (Hero is a Rashomon-style mystery, House of Flying Daggers a tragic romance), both films share a common characteristic—battle scenes that defy the laws of physics, filled with explosions of color and elaborate art design.
Despite the high flying stunts, House of Flying Daggers is unquestionably a Yimou film—despite the action, the pacing is more suited to a traditional drama, and the impressive visuals are more meditative than visceral.
