The House of Holstein-Gottorp, a branch of the Oldenburg dynasty, rose to several thrones.
He expressed wishes that their house be known as Vasa, as the new Royal House of Vasa and the continuation of the original.
Adolf Frederick's grandson Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in 1809 following the loss of Finland, and the remaining parts of the dynasty became extinct with the death of his uncle Charles XIII in 1818.

Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich succeeded as de jure Head of the Imperial House in 1918, though the precise fate of his predecessors at the hands of the revolutionaries was not known until some time later.

Holstein-Gottorp was a duchy consisting of areas within Schleswig and Holstein in present-day Denmark and Germany.
It was extant from 1544 when it was ceded to Adolf brother of King Christian III of Denmark to 1773 when it was reincorporated into the kingdom.
The dukes of Holstein-Gottorp conducted a successful policy two effects of which were the Swedish House of Holstein-Gottorp (reigning from 1751 until 1818) and the Russian Imperial Family of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov (reigning briefly 1762 and then from 1796 until 1918).

The dynastic policy of the Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp resulted in cadet branches of the House of Holstein-Gottorp ruling Sweden from 1751 until 1818 and Oldenburg from 1773 to 1918, while the senior branch ruled Russia briefly in 1762 and then again from 1796 until 1917.
This heir is morganatic in Russian sense, but the House of Oldenburg had no full limitations against unequal marriages.
In the case of Grand Duke Dmitri's marriage with Audrey Emery being unacceptable to Holstein tituar succession, then there opens the full quagmire of various Romanov marriages and which of them are not acceptable in succession of Holstein etc. Presumably, marriages with countesses and princesses are at least acceptable, and thus male-line heirs exist.

The last member of the house of Schauenburg dies 1640 and his part of Holstein goes to the king of Denmark.

When he died in 1444, his sons were under age and were raised by their maternal uncle the duke of Holstein, who arranged for the eldest Christian to be elected king of Denmark in 1448, and for the youngest Gerhard to receive Oldenburg and Delmenhorst.
In 1713 king Frederik IV occupied the Gottorp share of both duchies and in 1721 gave back only the portion in the duchy of Holstein, uniting the portion in Schleswig (the most important possession of the Gottorp line) with his own, with the approval of Sweden, France and Great Britain.
A house law was promulgated in 1872, although not published as a law as in other constitutional monarchies, because it was limited to matters regarding the internal management of the grand-ducal house.
