He was the mormaer of Moray, a House which claimed the throne of Scotland by the Celtic law of tanistry.
By 1215, the House of Moray was both exiled and defeated.

The main house was built during the 1620s by Mary, Dowager Countess of Home, the eldest daughter of Edward, 9th Lord Dudley, and second wife and widow of Alexander, 1st Earl Home.
The house remained in the hands of the Moray family and their dcscendants for a further two hundred years and in the early eighteenth century some of the negotiations leading to the Act of Union were conducted here.
The current house comprises not only the Morays’ early seventeenth century block, but also a number of later extensions – the plain southern wing was added in the eighteenth century and during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries new buildings were erected on the east side.

 Moray House
The Moray Firth is a roughly triangular area of the North Sea, north and east of Inverness.
Furthermore, Lord Moray holds the title Baron Stuart, of Castle Stuart in the County of Inverness; since it is in the Peerage of Great Britain, it entitled the Earls of Moray to sit in the House of Lords until the passage of the Peerage Act 1963.
Perhaps the most well-known Earl of Moray was James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, the husband of Elizabeth Stewart, 2nd Countess of Moray, who held the Earldom ''jure uxoris'' (by right of his wife), as he was the subject of a famous ballad, "The Bonny Earl of Murray" ("Murray" being a variant spelling of "Moray").

Óengus of Moray (died 1130) is the last known member of the kindred to have ruled Moray, after which it passed to William fitz Duncan of the Cenél nGabráin descended royal family.

One of the grandest mansions on Edinburgh's Canongate is Moray House, built in 1625 by the Dowager Countess of Home and named after her daughter Margaret, Countess of Moray, who inherited the property in 1643.
Moray House was also where the Act of Union of 1707 was to be signed by the commissioners, but the street riots were such that a change of venue to a cellar on the High Street was necessary.

THIS afternoon students from the PGDE secondary course will be taking part in a conference to show what we have learned this year and celebrate everything that we have achieved.
My own personal experience of the course at Moray House has been fairly positive, but in many cases the achievements we are celebrating have been hard-won.
