The house is predominantly wood frame construction, with a brick foundation.
The house also has many conveniences that were rarely found at the time of its construction, including steam and forced-air heating, modern indoor toilets and plumbing, push-button gas lights, hot shower from indoor plumbing and even three elevators, including one model which is unique to the house.
Tim Powers' novel "Earthquake Weather" incorporates the legends of the Winchester House and suggests that Sara Winchester built the structure as a deliberate effort to capture and channel ghosts as a 'mask' to protect her from detection by otherworldly forces.

The House of Mystery that I refer to in this essay, is located in the StoryMOO (http://dkm.itu.dk:7000) at the IT University in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The House of Mystery is intended to be a virtual version of a murder mystery dinner, at which the particpants are supposed to solve a murder that has taken place prior to the commencement of the game.
As is, I hope that both the House of Mystery fiction rooms and the fact rooms will endow even a singular visitor with some sense of being in a world of mystery and murder and with a desire to learn more about the workings of it.

The house was rapidly growing and expanding and while Sarah claimed to have no master plan for the structure, she met each morning with her foreman and they would go over the her hand-sketched plans for the day’s work.
In order to insure that the house would never be finished, she decided to board up the front 30 rooms of the mansion so that the construction would not be complete - and also so that the spirits who fell when portion of the house collapsed would be trapped inside forever.
It was a house "where downstairs leads neither to the cellar nor upstairs to the roof." The rooms of the house were counted over and over again and five years later, it was estimated that 160 rooms existed.....

It's a mystery because I have absolutely no idea where it is. It's somewhere between Walkterton and Markdale, something like 3 hours north of here.
The back porch roof had collapsed in on the house, and there were many holes in the second floor.
Probably the most interesting part of the entire house was how the interior floor was absolutely covered with hundreds and hundreds of rusted nails.

According to the hand-painted sign, the Amazing House of Mystery is situated on "a natural vortex"; evidently, there are only five such natural vortices in the entire U.S. of A. I guessed that they all sit on the outskirts of national parks.
The water in the toilet didn't do anything particularly mysterious when I flushed it, so the restrooms are presumably safely outside the vortex.
