The House of Oldenburg is a North German noble family and one of Europe's most influential Royal Houses.
In 15th century, the Oldenburg heir of that claim married Hedwig of Holstein, a descendant of Euphemia of Sweden and Norway and also a descendant of Eric V of Denmark.
The House of Mecklenburg became its chief competitor regarding the Northern thrones, and other claimants were e.g the House of Lauenburg.

The Diocese of Oldenburg was suffragan to the Archdiocese of Bremen; during the great revolt of the Slavic peoples in 1066, it ceased to exist, but was re-established in 1149 as the See of St. Vicelin, a missionary among the Slavs.

The House of Holstein-Gottorp, a branch of the Oldenburg dynasty, rose to the Swedish throne with King Adolf Frederick in 1751.
He was elected crown prince on June 23, 1743 as a Swedish concession to the Russian Tsar, a strategy for achieving an acceptable peace after the disastrous war of the same year.
Adolf Frederick's grandson Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in 1809 following the loss of Finland, and the remaining parts of the dynasty became extinct with the death of his uncle Charles XIII in 1818.

A house law was promulgated in 1872, although not published as a law as in other constitutional monarchies, because it was limited to matters regarding the internal management of the grand-ducal house.
The grand-duchy consisted of three parts: the old duchy of Oldenburg, itself composed of the original counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst and the lordship of Jever (acquired 1818); the principality ofLübeck (acquired 1803), and the principality of Birkenfeld (acquired 1817).

The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was the eighth-largest member state of the German Empire in size and the tenth-largest in population.
Oldenburg had managed to stay out of the Thirty Years' War and the initial phases of the Napoleonic Wars, but in 1808 Oldenburg was forced to join Napoleon's Conferation of the Rhine and was to contribute an 800-man infantry regiment.
The Oldenburg Regiment became part of the army of the German Confederation established in 1815 and in 1830 was expanded to two regiments of 10 companies.

Christian of Oldenburg elected Christian I, King of Denmark 1448 and Norway 1450, reigned as King of Sweden 1457-64, Duke of Schleswig and Count of Holstein, Stormarn and Dithmarschen, etc 1460 (Duke from 1474).
A new law allowing for the succession of females to the throne, limiting succession to the descendants of King Christian X, was passed by Parliament 27 March 1953 and by referendum 5 June 1953.
With the accession of Queen Margrethe II 1972 the use of the titles of King of the Wends and Goths, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, Dithmarschen, Lauenburg and Oldenburg were abandoned (even though all descendants in the male line enjoy the Schlesvig, Holstein titles by right).
