David Bowie may be a hero, again - theage.com.au
Visconti's key technique is to encourage Bowie to give in to his weirder urges (Heathen features a theremin, a stylophone and an oil drum), then rein them in with his own spectacular talent as an arranger.
Without Visconti, Bowie was pop but lacking in adventure in the 1980s; weird but often impenetrable in the 1990s.

Telegraph | Entertainment | King of cinema or count of kitsch?
While the director Luchino Visconti was shooting his second film, La Terra Trema (1947), about penniless Sicilian fishermen fighting their oppressors, he befriended a young peasant, Ignazio Maccarrone, and took him home with him.
Although no one would challenge Visconti's craftsmanship and sense of spectacle, there is still little consensus on his status in the pantheon of cinema, or even on the merits of individual films.
Visconti himself, asked to sum up his own achievements, offered simply, "He was a good artisan, a good worker." Shortly we shall see if this was self-deprecating understatement or an accurate assessment.
