Hollywood Gothique: House of Wax (2005) Review
This is one of the few moments reminiscent of the 1953 film, which began with a fire, instead of ending with one.
The other vestige of the old film is the killer whose real face is covered with a wax mask, but this little detail is so overwhelmed by other gross-out scenes that it is ultimately anti-climactic and pointless.
This film in turn served as the basis for the 1953 effort HOUSE OF WAX.

In the case of House of Wax the "new" idea is having all the victims of the now-standard slasher killer covered in wax and perfectly preserved as realistic mannequins in one hell of a creepy Wax Museum.
No, House of Wax is aimed at those who want to jump out of their seats, to be startled if not scared, to be surprised and laugh because of it.

House of Wax gets high marks for its body count and the innovative ways in which its participants are dispatched.
House of Wax has its share of genuinely gruesome moments, none of which are directly related to Paris Hilton's supposed "acting." The most grotesque of these features Carly tumbling headlong into a pit of rotting animal carcasses.
The film is awkwardly paced, with a protracted introduction that wastes too much time attempting to develop characters that aren't going to be around long enough to care about.

UGO.com Film/TV - House of Wax (1953/2005) - Twice Scared: UGO's Guide to Horror Remakes
House of Wax features Vincent Price in what is arguably his most famous role.
Originally in 3D, House of Wax took full advantage of its gruesome premise (as much as it could back in 1953), and is just as creepy without the funny glasses, though it is remembered as one of the best and most successful examples of 3D special effects filmmaking.
The film was inspired by the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and Wrong Turn more than anything else, with a cast of attractive young people (including Elisha Cuthbert) breaking down in one of those hot, middle-of-nowhere rural American towns and encountering all sorts of mayhem.

A lot of people are flaming this film for the presence of Paris Hilton, but this is not a fair reason to object to the movie.
The film also makes fun of her on several occasions, usually involving a camera and at least once in night vision.
For those who enjoy Paris Hiltons stage presence, this may be a movie to see at home when its released on video, because at the screening I was at, we all laughed at her misfortunes through the movie and she is portrayed as a "woman of questionable values".

House of Wax is not a good movie but it is an efficient one, and will deliver most of what anyone attending House of Wax could reasonably expect, assuming it would be unreasonable to expect very much.
It's a good thing Jaume Serra's House of Wax wasn't shot in 3-D like the original 1953 horror classic - Paris Hilton is in it and she doesn't have a third dimension.
Paris Hilton is the big draw in Jaume Collet-Serra's not-really-a-remake horror-slasher thriller House of Wax, and she'd have to be: There's so little else going on in it that you find yourself waiting for her few brief scenes.

Overshadowing the concept of the 2005 film House of Wax was the inclusion of none other than Paris Hilton in one of the main roles.
At the center of the town is also an old House of Wax that used to be the main draw for tourists, before the highway was built 15 miles outside of town, and took all the people in a different direction.
The horror aspect of the film revolves around the House of Wax, and its inhabitants.

 House of Wax (2005)
There is a wax museum (which naturally goes up in flames at the end), although one can also note that the filmmakers have taken the 'house of wax' concept with an amusing literalness - a house that is literally made of wax.
We do have human bodies being killed and encased in wax and a character who hides their deformed face behind a mask (which is naturally unveiled during the climactic scene, although not by the heroine as was the case in all previous versions).
There is an excellent climax with the house of wax burning down and melting, with the heat causes the wax figures to start melting and exposing their skeletal interiors, as the heroes try to escape while wading through oozing wax.

Movie Review - House of Wax (2005) - eFilmCritic
House of Wax, the latest slasher remake from Dark Castle entertainment, would fit perfectly into this category if it weren’t for the absence of a cabin.
Despite House of Wax’s cruelty, director Jaume Serra, does a nice job of keeping the action brisk while tossing in plenty of references to classic horror films like The Blair Witch Project and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the fans.
House of Wax’s sadistic cruelty may be unforgivable, but at least it’s infinitely more entertaining than pretentious ‘art house’ horror films like White Noise, Hide and Seek, and The Amityville Horror, because it’s swiftly paced and not overly elaborate.

 House of Wax (2005)
The 1953 film House of Wax introduced fans of Gothic horror to Vincent Price, who played a troubled artist fond of using his murder victims to populate a prominent wax museum.
Price went on to star in numerous horror films: wax museums have gone the way of drive-in theatres and roller-derby – eternally kitschy, still around, but increasingly rare, a dwindling remnant of the pop culture of yesteryear.
The 2005 House of Wax is in no way a remake of the Price classic, but it gets one thing right in depicting the wax museum as a tacky anachronism.

A lot of the gore in the film is totally gratuitous and certainly does not add to the enjoyment of the film.
The dialogue and characterisation in "House of Wax" is cliched and uninspired and the action is mostly predictable, although the acting itself is reasonably good.
For me,the highlight of the movie was the House of Wax itself, a superb Gothic creation and the stunning special effects in it at the end are the saving grace of a fairly run of the mill "horror" movie.

By and large, House of Wax is simply a mundane slasher flick populated by blandly pretty people who look really good in sweaty tank tops.
Yet the film gets bonus points for Hilton’s videotaped spike-through-the-forehead death scene, which (more so than an earlier, direct reference) proves to be a mordantly amusing allusion to the heiress’ infamous sex tape and a sly riff on our culture’s morbid, love-hate fascination with celebrity.

When, finally, Wade and Carly stumble on the literal "House of Wax" (a local museum featuring wax figures, wax walls, wax furniture, wax floors -- apparently the sun does not shine too fiercely in Ambrose), you're feeling ready to have their adventure over with already.
Here Carly and Wade are separated, meaning only that he is the film's first casualty, while she discovers the monstrosity of their host and must now take up the Final Girl's usual routine, namely, running, losing her cell phone, and crying until Nick shows up to save her.

The really dramatic 3D effects in this film are played for laughs, and I think that's one of the keys to its overall success.

The film opens in 1974, we see parents tending to their two children, one behaving himself, the other struggling violently and needing to be strapped into his high chair.
Elisha is the star of this film, she does a good job playing at alternate times the strong woman and the frightened girl, I guess those years of crazy story arcs on 24 have paid off.
The centerpiece of the film is the town itself, a wax building, wax people all over the town, and an underground labyrinth which seems to connect the entire town.

WHITE NOISE (2005) - Film Review
Then the film moves into feel-good territory when Keaton’s character comes to believe that he can contact his dead wife through EVP.
The final revelation of the real culprit is a hackneyed cliché; the character is so peripheral to the action that the “surprise” is totally unsatisfying, feeling like a desperate attempt to provide an un-guessable twist.
Keaton gives a good performance as the obsessed widower mourning his wife, but that character arc is abandoned when the film turns from drama to scares, and by the time the story winds down to its conclusion we have disengaged to the point that it feels like watching an empty special effects show.

Combustible Celluloid film review - House of Wax (2005), Jaume Collet-Serra, Elisha Cuthbert, Paris Hilton, dvd review
House of Wax included a frighteningly surreal sequence in which a fire breaks out in the museum (run by Vincent Price), licks the wax figures and melts them.
The new film actually succeeds with a similarly spectacular finale, having to do with a more literal interpretation of "house of wax," that lands almost on par with its predecessor.
The actors are mostly pretty faces from television, though Elisha Cuthbert (TV's "24," The Girl Next Door) has a shot at something bigger, and Paris Hilton is always fascinating, in a science experiment sort of way.
