House of Wax (2005) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
The movie has pacing problems, introduces us to characters that have zero personality (thankfully, most of them get it by the end of the movie), and offers up cheap laughs (including repeated scenes in which Paris Hilton is caught on video taped making out with her boyfriend).
This movie is disjointed beyond belief, and the fashion in which the writers explain things, is beyond stupid.
House of Wax really isn’t a very good movie but there was enough visual bravado and horrific carnage in the final act to make this more effective than The Amityville Horror.

 Blu-ray Review: House of Wax (2005) | High-Def Digest
'House of Wax' is far from the worst of this bunch, but it may be the most dispiriting, because the original 'House of Wax' could have served as the foundation for a genuinely unique, lively remake.
Since key to the plot of 'House of Wax' is who (or whom?) is doing the killing, and what exactly is going on in the small, isolated town that serves as the film's setting, I won't offer any plot recap.
Though low-budget by studio standards, 'House of Wax' is still far more polished than those old '70s slasher movies of yore, so dialogue is always clear and intelligible, and there no aural anomalies, such as scratchy high end or bad ADR to distract.

TheMovieBoy Review - House of Wax (2005)
"House of Wax," a reinvisioning of the 1953 Vincent Price B-movie, borrows the general idea behind that film—a madman who turns his victims into wax figures for his ghastly museum—to concoct an affectionate throwback to the slasher genre of the '80s and '90s, albeit one smarter, more stylish, and eerier than most.
Whereas most slasher films fall apart when dealing with their characters and bringing their stories to a conclusion, "House of Wax" features people who may just turn out to be victims, but seem genuine as a group of college-aged friends who are unaware of the danger lurking just around the corner.
"House of Wax" is the first unequivocally good—and often downright great—popcorn entertainment of the still-early summer movie season, and the most satisfying release from Robert Zemeckis' Dark Castle horror label, to date.

The marginal twist on the formula in "House of Wax" is that the teens encounter a maniac who likes making real life wax statues of the unfortunate travellers he somehow manages to secret away to his surprisingly well-equipped lair, which is, in a stunning act of fiercely intellectual irony, made of actual wax.
This in itself is of course a dispiriting side note, rather than an actual criticism, as "House of Wax" is no guiltier of unoriginality than the vast majority of recent genre releases.
There really is only one reason for watching "House of Wax", and that is to answer the question 'does Paris Hilton die?' In the name of saving viewers from having to put themselves through an excruciatingly painful and dull experience, the answer is 'yes'.

House of Wax (2005) Starring: Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Brian Van Holt - Three Movie Buffs Review
House of Wax wants to be an old school 80's slasher film, but by being afraid to go all the way, it only ends up being slasher-lite.
The twist in this movie is that not only does the killer dispatch his victims in gory ways; he then preserves their bodies in wax, creating his own wax museum.
One major area in which this movie fails to emulate its 80's ancestors is in its lack of sex and nudity.

Trivia: In the movie theatre where Carly and Nick are hiding, most of the wax figures were actually extras wearing masks.
For those who enjoy Paris Hiltons stage presence, this may be a movie to see at home when its released on video, because at the screening I was at, we all laughed at her misfortunes through the movie and she is portrayed as a "woman of questionable values".
The movie itself was pretty good (unlike the recent flood of weak horror flicks), it has everything a good horror should; a creepy villain, excessive violence, acts which make that average person cringe...this movie hit all the bases.

House of Wax Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Based on 1953's House of Wax, this remake follows a group of college students whose road trip leads them to a rural town inhabited by the wax-coated corpses of unlucky visitors.
And that's the problem with House of Wax: in the long lags between the gory and lascivious parts (and there are plenty of both) this is just about the dullest scary movie ever made.
Based very, very loosely on a 1953 movie of the same name, House of Wax begins with a bunch of college students from somewhere in Florida—we know that because of their license plate—headed somewhere in Louisiana to watch a Big Football Game.

MovieFreak.com - "House of Wax (2005)" Movie Review
The town, whose main attraction is the unusually constructed Trudy’s House of Wax, is ominously quiet, the only residents apparently active being an elderly woman looking out her living room window and a belligerent gas station owner named Bo (Brian Van Holt, Black Hawk Down) paying his last respects at a local funeral.
If this is the only reason you’re going to the movie, and lord knows it might be the only good reason to actually go, you’re sure to come away as enthused and excited as the preview crowd I saw it with.
In the end, House of Wax is just as cold, impersonal and lifeless as the ghoulish statues populating it.

The monger of all that is sinister contributes 1996's NIN-ish "Dried Up, Tied and Dead to the World." House of Wax throws some curveballs alongside standard alt metal fare like Disturbed ("Prayer") and Bloodsimple ("Path to Prevail").
Still, House of Wax includes pretty much what you'd expect from the soundtrack to a movie so scary, it stars Paris Hilton.

Flipside Movie Emporium: House of Wax Movie Review
House of Wax presents another variation in a very old conundrum for movie critics.
It features a group of annoying young people who are picked off one by one (often after enjoying some dirty sinful sex), a dark, spooky environment containing both buzzing fluorescent lights and ominous rural backwoods, and a gimmicky villain with whom the audience is (at least in part) intended to bond.
House of Wax does right by Ambrose as a setting, using it to conjure the same skin-crawling atmosphere as the Vincent Price original upon which is it ever-so-passingly based.

This was supposed to be a horror movie, and it is quite poor one as horror.
It starts off with a theme that many other horrors movies have used; a group of teenaged friends have car trouble in the middle of nowhere, half of the friends stay at the car and the other half go to a nearby "deserted" town in search of help.

This really is all that the plot has to offer, and there is absolutely no attempt to spice up the standard formula in any fashion whatsoever.
What really sticks in the craw however is the way the film makes no attempt to excel in any way, and seems to almost deliberately avoid pushing the envelope or stray from its by-the-numbers approach in every aspect of production.

There are a number of horror cliches at work, such as if you have sex, or plan on it, you will die, the heroine will inexplicably run up stairs when she should be getting out of the building, among others.
The centerpiece of the film is the town itself, a wax building, wax people all over the town, and an underground labyrinth which seems to connect the entire town.
The first, which I found to be the less desirable of the two, is that it is just another in a long line of lousy horror films with a cheesy story, weak acting and a predictable ending.
