The House, at this point, became rulers of all England (Bretwalda) from Alfred the Great in 871 to Edmund II in 1016.

Eadwig (Edwy) (955-59 AD) On the death of Eadred, who had no children, Eadwig was chosen to be king since he was the oldest of the children in the natural line of the House of Wessex.
For her part, " the strumpet" was eventually referred to as among "the most illustrious of women", and Eadwig, in his short reign, was generous in making grants to the church and other religious institutions.
With this, Edgar was King of Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex (the three most powerful kingdoms in England at that time), simultaneously and could be considered the first ruler of a United England.

 Kingston Maurward House (I)
Kingston Maurward House, circa 1790, home of the Pitt family, was used as "Knapwater" house in Hardy's short stories and as "Enckworth House" in The Hand of Ethelberta.
The house was regularly and substantially built of clean grey freestone throughout, in that plainer fashion of classicism which prevailed at the latter end of the eighteenth century, when the copyists called designers had grown weary of fantastic variations in the Roman orders.
Thus, Hardy describes the house as a sort of "whited sepulcher," a reflection of the hypocritical owner whose polished surface is belied by his sometimes crude and always sensual character.
