The Freedom House, which has been compiling worldwide freedom indices for three decades, judged that in 2000-01, Saudi Arabia has the least free press of every country on the planet, except for Iraq, North Korea, Burma, Afghanistan and Cuba (in descending order of nastiness).
Freedom House also ranks countries by how “free” they are in terms of general political rights and civil liberties.

The United States went in there primarily to make sure that Afghanistan is not and would not become a base for the operations of al Qaeda or any other international terrorist group and I've not seen a good estimate as to how many people were there to begin with, how many have been killed.
It's sort of extraordinarily spurious accuracy given that all the censuses that have taken place in Afghanistan, and there haven't been many, and the last one was in the 1970s, were really driven by a variety of Pashtun political concerns.
