The remains of the houses found in the Peiraeus are of the same simple plan as those at Priene, and suggest, that the Greek house was considered to be the private residence only for the members of the family, and without any provision for entertaining guests as in Rome and Pompeii.
The house of Livia on the Palatine Hill was in two storeys, and the decoration was of a much finer character than those of Pompeii; this house and the House of the Vestals might be taken as representative of the Roman house in Rome itself.
Houses in stone from the 12th to the 16th century are found in Cologne, Metz, Trier, Hanover and Munster in Westphalia, where again there are whole streets remaining; and in brick at Rostock, Stralsund, LUbeck, Greifswald and Dantzig, forming a very remarkable series of 15th and 16th-century work.

The House of the Surgeon was brought to light when Spaniard Francesco La Vega cleared the central zone of our city block of ash and lapilli in the 1770s.
His work in the central courtyard, or atrium, led him to believe the house was the oldest in the city to remain standing in A.D. 79, and he dated its construction to the fourth century B.C. This foundation date for the House of the Surgeon has been fundamental to the study of Italian domestic architecture.
