The House in William Castle's original was a Frank Lloyd Wright house, and it stood out for two reasons: first, it was phenomenally ugly, especially in the manner in which Castle's camera captured it; and second, it seemed the least likely setting for a ghost story that anyone could possibly imagine.
The new, utterly different House is all verticals, tall and thin and perched atop a cliff overlooking the ocean.
As the movie goes on, we see the house is full of wicked-looking torture devices, and the door to the room in which Vannacutt was performing a vivisection at the time of the riot is marked "Hygiene".

TheMovieBoy Review: House on Haunted Hill (1999)
While "The Haunting" was more sophisticated, with a superior cast, a budget of around $80-million, and a kid-friendly PG-13 rating, "House on Haunted Hill" is a gory, atmospheric, $20-million, R-rated spookathon.
The catch, it turns out, is that the house really is being haunted by the maniacal doctor (Jeffrey Combs) who was killed in 1931, and that all five guests are unknowingly related to the five inmates who survived decades before.
Admittedly, "House on Haunted Hill" has a zinger of a premise, a sort of ghastly rendition of 1993's "Indecent Proposal," in which people were asked if they'd cheat on their spouse for one night, and a million smackers, with Robert Redford.

House On Haunted Hill (1999) is a good example of how modern filmmakers have in general forgotten how to make films and think that a bunch of cool effects will hide the obvious flaws like lack of a creditable plot, mediocre acting and so on.

While watching "House On Haunted Hill" for the first time in a long while I was witnessing a well-done adaptation of a previously done movie.
Much of the horror in the film actually stems from the suggestive visuals rather than open gore, and the almost surreal atmosphere of the house is nicely captured, leaving the viewer in the dark for the most part whether he actually witnesses events unfold, or figments of the characters’ imaginations.

For the horror film, 1999 turned out to be the "year of the haunted house," with not one but two remakes of old films centered around gothic old mansions.
While the original version of THE HAUNTING is a legitimate horror classic (as the dismal 1999 update ably proved), the original THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL was just fun and campy so was probably better suited for a modern updating.
Colors are eye-popping, and as THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL is a very dark and stylized film, fl level is appropriately "dead on" and the contrast is not too weak nor to strong.

The cast of Haunted Hill is nearly as diverse as the characters they play, and aside from Rush, none bears any significant screen presence.
The other haunted house picture for 1999, The Haunting, wanted to back up its scares with a dicey back story, but that only made the film more confusing than reasonably frightening.

Within the first scene there is gore (surgery on a wide awake man), violence (the inmates of the asylum break loose and attack the staff), and nudity (uniforms ripped open on the women).

 House on Haunted Hill (1999)
The House on Haunted Hill is no exception, as it takes B-movie impresario William Castle's 1958 camp-horror classic of the same name and retools it with all of the glitz, gloss, and special effects its $19 million budget could buy.
Using light and shadows, Don Davis' chill-inducing score, leaking blood, and the audience's anticipation of what might be lurking around the next corner, director William Malone manages to wrench a lot of suspense out of the hoariest of devices.
This House was co-produced by William Castle's daughter, Terry, and it's plain to see that this was meant, at least in part, as a tribute to her dad.

First up was the remake of The Haunting (1999), and this was followed variously by the amazing successes of The Blair Witch Project (1999) and The Sixth Sense (1999), as well as the likes of Stigmata (1999), Stir of Echoes (1999) and Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999).
Perhaps the film’s biggest departure over the original is that it is no longer a haunted house thriller wherein the supernatural was revealed to be of purely mundane origin at the end.
This allows Malone to quite adeptly play a haunted house carnival ride game dallying between whether what is going on is a real haunting, faked as part of the birthday party or a murder mystery plot.

Note on the DVD: House on Haunted Hill has one of the better collections of extras I've seen (although not as impressive as the Phantasm Limited Edition DVD), from featurettes contrasting the 1958 version with the present one to numerous special effects featurettes, excellent deleted scenes, and a great director's commentary.
