NGA - Love and War: The Housebook Master
The Housebook is a unique compilation of seemingly unrelated subjects: a classical text on the art of memory, personifications of the seven planets, illustrations of courtly life in the age of chivalry, household recipes and remedies, mining and metallurgy, and weaponry and warfare.
The Housebook Master, the anonymous artist responsible for the finest illustrations in the manuscript, was active in southern Germany between about 1465 and 1500, a time of transition from the medieval to the early modern era.
While the master was also a painter, he is known primarily for his illustrations in The Housebook and for his drypoint prints.

Master of the Housebook (or Meister des Hausbuchs) was a Rhenish or Dutch painter, draughtsman, and engraver active in the last quarter of the 15th century.
He is named from a series of drawings in the so-called Hausbuch in Schloss Wolfegg in south-west Germany; many of the drawings show scenes of everyday life and so do the engravings (about ninety are known) attributed to him.
A few paintings are also ascribed to the Housebook Master, including the Pair of Lovers (Gotha) and one in Mainz, dated 1505, but perhaps finished by another hand.

The command of perspective in the panoramas, however, is uncharacteristic of that Master’s work and argues against the identification of Reuwich with the Housebook Master, suggested by some scholars.
Four small glass windows (Amorbach, Heimatmus.) were installed in the Mainz Amtskellerei in December 1486 by ‘Master Erhard the Painter’ from Mainz, presumably Reuwich.
The poor quality of these windows is yet another argument against the identification with the Housebook Master.
