The saxon unit receiving the fire is a housecarl (value 5) so it becomes disordered (it's value drops to a 3).
The Norman infantry unit attacking the disordered Housecarl (stacked with Leofwine) rolls well but the presence of Leofwine (leader) and the good defensive benefit of the slope, modify the dice roll so that an 'elim' result is reduced to a disorder result instead.
The Housecarls on the front line will risk their own flanks if they turn within their hex to deal with the cavalry unit.

 Housecarl by Laurence J. Brown
HOUSECARL is a fitting tribute to the housecarls of Saxon England, argueably the finest infantry of Europe at the time.
This is the novel's strength and weakness: intriguing portraits of the doomed Harold and an admirable hero, the housecarl Ranulf, are diminished by sideplots involving characters that seemed either too modern or entirely irrelevant.
This story of Harold II and the Battle of Hastings is told from the perspective of one of the king's housecarls (fighting men with sworn loyalty to the king to fight for him till their deaths).

Caballus et Caballarius in Medieval Warfare
Although the designer of the Bayeux Tapestry generally cannot be relied upon to have provided lifelike proportions when executing fortifications and ships in relation to men and horses,7 his efforts in regard to the rider and his mount often strike the viewer as reasonably realistic.
One such case is particularly good and depicts a mounted fighting man from William's army engaging a housecarl who is wielding the often-celebrated two-handed Danish axe.
The Norman and Breton horse did not have to attack in a cohesive line, since the effectiveness of the foot soldiers, now isolated in the open field against better-armed and better-trained mounted soldiers in single combat, was limited.

Their most effective battle tactic being the shield wall, housecarls were the professional bodyguards of the king and other nobles and formed the core of Saxon armies.
While 'Housecarl' is not a great novel, lacking the deeper-etched characters and more intricate subplots of better fiction, it is a decent read and a good way to learn about a fascinating time in English history.
With these caveats, I recommend 'Housecarl', especially to those who know little of the period.

Author Laurence Brown, with his vivid style and enthusiasm, sticks quite close to the story as written down in the primary source De Gestis Herwardi Saxonis, even to the extent of using the Latinised names for some of the English resistance fighters.
Again there are problems with the finer points of detailed research but, as with Housecarl, you can easily put this to one side and enjoy getting swept along in the high adventure.
