The county population grew gradually from 25,452 in 1900 to 30,017 in 1930.
In 1982, 55 percent of the land in the county was in farms and ranches, with 14 percent of the land under cultivation and 3 percent irrigated; that year Houston County ranked ninety-first of the 254 Texas counties in agricultural receipts.

The Texas Department of Health (TDH) Seafood Safety Division (SSD) requested that the Health Risk Assessment and Toxicology Program (HRAT) evaluate the potential health risks associated with consumption of fish taken from Lake Houston, located about 18 miles northeast of Houston off of FM 1960.
This lake was built in the early 1950’s to serve as a water supply for the City of Houston and is fed by the San Jacinto River.
The Lake Houston Health Consultation was prepared by the Texas Department of Health under a cooperative agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
