About Last Night: Houston Grand Opera: an electrifying Giovanni
HGO music director Patrick Summers conducted the HGO Orchestra in a well-paced performance that dragged at a couple of slower spots in the tale.
I don't have Charles Ward's experience, nor have I lived in Houston more than five years, but I've seen three Giovannis in other towns in the past few years, including Thomas Hampson's at the Met, and this was easily the best of them.
We've all seen her a whole bunch of times at HGO lately, but I didn't know she had Elvira in her.

Handbook of Texas Online: HOUSTON GRAND OPERA
Gradually, however, the Houston opera's financial stability improved; these improvements coincided with the work of David Gockley, who was hired in 1970 as business manager and promoted in 1972 to the general director of the company.
Due to Gockley's imaginative leadership, the growing sophistication of opera audiences, and booming financial support for the arts due to Houston's emergence as a petroleum center, the Houston Grand Opera rose to national and international prominence.
He has aimed to present different kinds of opera to a diversified audience, in his own words combating, "the image of opera as a medium for only the wealthy and elite." Under Gockley's direction the company has expanded its repertory to include the less familiar works ranging from the Baroque era to the twentieth century.

Passionately committed to the premise that opera can be, and should be, a living art form that speaks to a variety of audiences, he has turned the opera world on its ear by fashioning HGO into America's leading commissioner and producer of new works, with 25 world premieres and 6 American premieres to its credit.

A reunion between the two would mean less work for the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, which formed in 1990 and has become HGO’s exclusive orchestra.
