In his inaugural address early in 1998, Houston Mayor Lee Brown said he was dedicating his administration to children and spoke of his vision of a Houston in which every school-age child is handed a library card instead of a beer, joint or pill.
And beyond these numbers, according to Houston Public Library officials, is the fact that the Power Card is helping existing library programs, such as ASPIRE — an after-school reading enrichment program for students in grades five to nine — and the Summer Reading Challenge, to attract record numbers of participants.
Houston Public Library staff members, of course, promote the card at every opportunity and issue them through outreach programs and a variety of community venues, and during school open houses and library branch events.

Residents of the State of Texas are eligible for a free Houston Public Library card and do not need to register as TexShare borrowers.
All library locations also have book drops for after-hours returns; AV formats may not be returned in book drops due to the risk of damage.

HPL Power Search includes a number of features unique to Houston Public Library, including a company and directory database search interface, offering a sophisticated custom mapping of search fields and filters from the common WebFeat interface into native database interfaces.
Houston Public Library's WebFeat system includes the WebFeat Usage Tracker ("WUT"), which tracks and reports usage for Houston Public Library's 150 databases.

Houston aspires to be a world-class city, and in many respects it already is. Its population is cosmopolitan; its architecture, industry, technology, port, medical center and performing arts groups are in the top rank and in some cases second to none.
Houston does not have $71 per year per person to spend on libraries, but it should be briskly expanding the library budget toward the middle range of $25.
Visitors to Houston's public libraries will find plenty of books on the shelves, and more and more research information is available on the Internet, a recent addition to the library's resources.

 Handbook of Texas Online: HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Houston Public Library began with the efforts of a group of Houstonians to develop organizations similar to Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia subscription library, Junto, and the American Philosophical Society.
The Houston Public Library traces its beginnings directly to the organization of a second Houston Lyceum on May 27, 1854, and the establishment of its library with a collection of fewer than 100 volumes.
Library use was desegregated in 1953, one year before the Supreme Court decision on the issue.

The Ideson Building served as the central library of the Houston Public Library System from 1926 until 1976, when a new building was constructed for the main branch.
The Houston Metropolitan Research Center maintains a professional staff of archivists, historians, and librarians to administer the more than 20,000 linear feet of manuscripts; private and public records; 50,000 printed volumes, journals, and government publications; and two million photographic negatives and prints, maps, and architectural drawings.
In July 1976 the archives were moved to permanent quarters at the Houston Public Library, where they would complement the holdings of its Texas and local history department.

Initial press reports said the city's library system might be forced to close eight of its 36 branches to meet $32 million in budget cuts proposed for FY 2004.

Houston Public Library Director Barbara A.B. Gubbin announced today that she will leave the city at the end of the year to become the director of the Jacksonville Public Library, in Florida.
I have also been fortunate to have had a supportive and hard-working Board of Trustees and three Friends groups, Friends of the Houston Public Library, of the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research, and of the Texas Room.
Since becoming director in 1995, she has overseen library expansion, with five new branch library buildings built and opened, one of which is a joint collaboration with Harris County.

The Interlibrary Loan Center (ILC) at the Houston Public Library provides interlibrary loan service to libraries within the Houston Area Library System (HALS) and to cardholders of the Houston Public Library.
If the material is available at the Houston Public Library or one of its branches, ILC staff will retrieve the item and ship it to the library via the U.S. postal service.
