In 1857 there was built a church and that made the separation of the parishes a fact.
The reason why the Klerkenaars (=inhabitants of Klerken) didn't object against the separation was probably that the grounds of the forest are less valuable.
In the year 1977 there was a fusion that made Klerken a part of Houthulst, so now it is the opposite: Klerken, a part of Houthulst instead of Houthulst, part of Klerken....

The Division took over the line South of the Houthulst Forest from the 34th Division on 24th October, and attacked with 149 Brigade two days later.

They made their way in the darkness to the battle zone, marching forward via Houthulst village and through the Houthulst Forest to Mangelaare.
However, as the day began to break on 15th April the regiment was ordered to withdraw and return to billets in the rear because the favourable wind had changed direction.

Currently, there is still about 2-3 % Debruyne's in Houthulst (comprising the former Klerken).
A good estimate indicates that 10 to 20 % of these must originate from Klerken as offspring of this single family in 1650.
