  Houtman Abrolhos
The Houtman Abrolhos and their surrounding coral reef communities, lie 60 km west of Geraldton[?], Western Australia and form a unique marine area.
Made up of three main groups, the Wallabi, Pelsaert (or Southern) and the Easter groups, it is the most southern coral reef formation in the world and has been the subject of intensive marine research.
It serves as a major resource for the local fishing industry, and provides some of the best snorkeling, diving and deep sea fishing in the world, along with some of Australia's most significant historical sights such as the ship wreck of the Batavia.

About the Abrolhos Islands, Abrolhos Islands Visitors Guide, Department of Fisheries, Western Australia
The Abrolhos Islands are an A-class Reserve managed by the Department of Fisheries for the conservation of flora and fauna, for tourism, and for purposes associated with fishing industries.
The islands of the Abrolhos are geologically diverse, with North Island, the Wallabis', Rat Island and Gun Island being classified as “mainland remnant” type islands made up of limestone, siltstone, and marls of continental origin that have been isolated by rising sea levels over the last 8,000-10,000 years.
Commercial fishing for trepang (sea cucumber) or beche-demer (Holothuria spp.) was conducted on a small scale at the Abrolhos for a period from the mid-1800s.

Seabird breeding behaviour on the Houtman Abrolhos indicates then that the marine environment and prey availability in waters adjacent to the Houtman Abrolhos is highly variable.
It is unclear whether the warmer water associated with the Leeuwin Current affects the spawning of adult Beaked Salmon, or whether the stronger southwards current flow may displace the larval stages beyond the foraging range of seabirds.
It was hypothesized that this may prevent the regular supply of Beaked Salmon that inhabit the south-west, being within reach of the foraging range of noddies at the Houtman Abrolhos (Surman and Wooller 2002, Appendix 3).

Evidence is presented that at least 60% of the 184 species of scleractinian corals found on reefs surrounding the Houtman Abrolhos Islands (Western Australia) participate in a late summer mass spawning.
Also there is overlap in the nights of mass spawning on the Houtman Abrolhos and tropical reefs of Western Australia, despite significant differences in tidal phase and amplitude between the two regions.
The co-occurrence of the mass spawning with spring tides in Houtman Abrolhos coral populations may be evidence of a genetic legacy inherited from northern, tropical ancestors.

The Houtman Abrolhos are a unique group of islands, reefs and lagoons located near the Australian continental shelf-edge, some 60 km off the mid-west coast of Western Australia.
The islands lie in the path of the warm Leeuwin Current which flows southwards along the Western Australian coastline from April to October and plays a vital role in modifying both the local climate and in the flora and fauna of the region.
Flowing from Indonesian waters, the Leeuwin Current brings warm, low nutrient, tropical waters to the Houtman Abrolhos that helps to maintain water temperatures of 20-22 °C in the winter, thus allowing many species to survive in an area that would normally be outside their range.
