 Hovenweep National Monument
The first site I visited is referred to as the Square Tower Group and is the largest of the groups of ruins that make up the Hovenweep National Monument.
Hovenweep is located approximately 20 miles north of Aneth Utah and straddles Southeast Utah and Southwest Colorado.
Hovenweep (a Ute Indian word meaning "deserted valley") contains six groups of prehistoric Anasazi Indian Ruins circa A.D. These include the remains of coursed-stone masonry pueblos, small cliff dwellings, and large quantities of scattered ruins.

 Utah History Encyclopedia
Located astride the southeastern Utah/southwestern Colorado border, Hovenweep National Monument is comprised of six ruin clusters--four in Colorado, two in Utah--all of which are perched on the canyon rims and along the drainage of the area.
The people of Hovenweep were culturally similar to those living at Mesa Verde; they adopted a corn, beans, and squash-based agriculture; constructed square, oval, circular, and D-shaped towers; manufactured and traded related pottery types; and built kivas and houses of identical construction.

Utah - Natural Bridges National Monument
Natural Bridges National Monument covers a relatively small area in southeast Utah.
Attractions: Unlike Arches National Park, with over 2000 classified arches, there are only three bridges here although the area also has some scattered Indian cliff dwellings, pictographs and scenic white sandstone canyons.
This is also the reason why bridges tend to be found within canyons, sometimes quite hidden, whereas arches are usually high and exposed, as they are often the last remnants of rock cliffs and ridges.

 Utah - Hovenweep National Monument
The name Hovenweep, a Paiute word meaning deserted valley, was bestowed on this region by explorer and photographer William Jackson in 1874, and the site became a national monument in 1923.
In a wild, remote and somewhat forgotten part of the Southwest, Hovenweep National Monument contains six separate prehistoric ruined villages dating from the Pueblo period of the mid thirteenth century.
Towers are a particular feature of Hovenweep, and other similar structures of note are the two storey Square Tower, a tall, elegant column rising from the canyon floor, and Twin Towers on the opposite rim, unusual because of especially intricate masonry and the differing geometries of the two turrets - one horseshoe-shaped, the other oval.

Many moved to the San Juan and Monument Valley regions of Utah, which became part of the Navajo Reservation in 1884.

SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Nation -- BLM may retreat from oil-and-gas plans near prehistoric dwellings
"There is simply no justification for BLM to offer oil and gas leases on the doorsteps of sacred places like Hovenweep National Monument," said Stephen Bloch, staff attorney for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.
Oil and gas drills will degrade the "unblemished" views and solitude at the monument, said Larry Van Slyke, the former chief park ranger for the Southeast Utah Group of National Parks.
Also weighing in was Sonia Hutmacher-Cunningham, a vice president for the Utah Professional Archaeological Council, who said oil-and-gas development was incompatible with the monument's natural beauty and prehistoric sites.
