If we try to stick with physics, we should conclude Marty and Griff's buddies were wasting time trying to accelerate the hoverboards by pushing the air with their legs.
Even if the hoverboard goes gain some acceleration forward from such a push, it must gain the same acceleration backward when the rider moves his leg forward to make another push.
Hoverboards are impossible anyway, we are just asked to believe they are possible because they look cool and are a significant story element.

Let me say this - I have no actual plans for a hoverboard and if I did, odds are I wouldn't give them away.
You cannot actualy buy a working hoverboard to my knowledge and I have no idea how much an actual one is. True, a prototype was made on a minuture scale but in order for it to work, it would have to go on a magnetic track.

It might not be in our life times but the way we are progressing with technology is unbelievable and I believe it wouldn't be too hard to make a Hoverboard hover a few inches off the ground.
People that work for dominos pizza would travle on a hoverboard instread of the usural motorbikes.
I think that is cool, at first it would be dangerous, and of low quality, but I think with time the hoverboard would progress and become much more safe, more powerful, easier to handle, with a much more sleek design, and become conventional and sold commercialy.

For sale here is a hand-built replica of the Mattel Hoverboard used in Back To The Future II and III by Marty McFly in numerous scenes.
Hoverboard has a small indintation on the lower left side about 1/3 inch in size but is hardly noticable.
This is a decent example of a home-made prop replica Hoverboard and I'd like to find a good home for it.
