HOVERSPEED, the cross- Channel operator, has filed a £50 million damages claim against HM Customs and Excise accusing its staff of "significantly damaging" its business by the "heavy handed" searching of passengers returning from booze-cruises to the Continent.
Hoverspeed, which carries more than 300,000 vehicles a year, said Customs officers had been too keen to carry out random searches, deterring people with innocent shopping plans from crossing the channel.
