Zion or Tzion (צִיּוֹן "Height", Standard Hebrew Tziyyon, Tiberian Hebrew Tsiyyôn; Arabic صهيون á¹¢uhyÅ«n) originally was the specific name given to a Jebusite fortress near modern-day Jerusalem that was conquered by David.
Zion, or Sion, is an archaic term that originally referred to a section of Jerusalem, which, by Biblical definition, is the City of David.
In fiction, Zion is often used as the name for a safe haven or homeland, as in The Matrix films where "Zion" is the last free human city, located deep beneath the surface of Earth.

 Leon Pinsker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leon Pinsker (1821-1891) was a physician, a Zionist pioneer and activist, and the founder and leader of the Hovevei Zion movement.
Eventually Pinsker came to agree with Moses Lilienblum that hatred of Jews was rooted in the fact that they were foreigners everywhere except their original homeland, the Land of Israel.
He became one of the founders and a chairman of the Hovevei Zion movement, with the backing of Baron Edmond James de Rothschild.

In 1889, he married and moved to Minsk where he continued activities with 'Netzach Yisrael' in secret and became known in public as one of the great 'darshanim' of the time.
In 1893, Rabbi Nissenbaum was ordained and later in the year attended a secret Hovevei Zion meeting, headed by Rabbi Samuel Mohilever, where Mizrachi began as a religious section of Hibbat Zion.
With the advent of Herzl, Rabbi Nissenbaum became the basic link of communication between Herzl and the members of Hovevei Zion.
