Lawrence J. Cantor and Company: Fine Old Art: Hovsep Pushman Gallery - Lawrence J. Cantor and Company
Hovsep Pushman's annual exhibitions at the Grand Central Art Galleries, beginning in the late 1920s and continuing until his death in 1966, were always a significant event.
Pushman's paintings and prints were displayed at the Galleries in a velvet-draped room with special lighting to enhance the delicate quality of their softly glazed surfaces.
Hovsep Pushman was born May 9, 1877 in the part of Armenia known as Turkish Ermenistan (Armenia).

Hovsep Pushman was one of those rare artists whose work was appreciated by both critics and collectors, and who enjoyed recognition and good fortune.
Pushman, later a naturalized American citizen, was born in Armenia in 1877.
Thereafter, Pushman's career was devoted to one subject, oriental mysticism, and one form, the still life.

Hovsep Pushman (1877 - 1966): The Armenian Spirit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
It was Dechenaud, a highly respected portrait painter, noted for his rich sense of color, who urged Pushman to absolute self-expression, by drawing on the entire gamut of his oriental heritage.
A commentary in an international art magazine, stated: "At his [Hovsep Pushman] recent exhibition in New York such was the eagerness to secure examples of his work that every single picture was sold on the opening day.
There is, however, a forgotten document that the staff of The Illuminator rescued from obscurity, which describes Pushman's contribution to American art: "Hovsep Pushman, an American artist of Armenian birth, is an excellent craftsman and he finds in objects of the East models of form and color which he paints with rare fidelity.

And the legend connected with this painting is related to us by Pushman: "This painting is symbolical of the spiritual legend of life, which has attracted artists from earliest times having a suggested power of right over wrong.
Pushman has won the acclaim in his lifetime that other artists of note have won only after their death and through long years of struggle.
The color of his objects cannot be adequately captured in words, but he enhances the quality of his color with a special brush technique which sharply differentiates the frayed book page from the porcelain figurine, from the textile background, from the withered rose.

Many know of his admiration for Hovsep Pushman and recognize his use of some of Pushman's imagery connected to oriental themes.
But that is only the slightest of Pushman's influences on the man. It was Pushman's visual principles and colour modelling of both forms and space which were at the root of Hensche's admiration.
Pushman's tepid reception however did not put Hensche off from continuing his evaluations and comparisons even to the point of taking his own work into galleries and holding it up next to Pushman's to compare the levels of modelling refinement.
