How Few Remain is about a fictional second American Civil War (the Confederates having one the first in 1863) set in 1881.
"How Few Remain" has the downside of having started the interminable Great War/American Empire/Return Engagement series, with their dismal characterization and mindless parallels of the historical 20th century, but taken on its own, How Few Remain is the best thing of Turtledove's I've ever read.
In How Few Remain, Harry Turtledove weaves a plausible and entertaining yarn in which the 2nd United States Civil War is waged in 1881-1882.

"How Few Remain" is based on a history in which the CSA won their independence as the result of some changed circumstances at the battle of Sharpsburg in 1862.
In this timeline, the late 19th and ealy 20th century CSA have a national flag, which is the "Stars and Bars" with its 3 bars of red/white/red and its circle of white stars on a blue canton, and the Saltire battle flag, which is used as a military flag and a navy ensign.

The author's own version of how he took his more famous pen name, Mark Twain, is interesting.
It was submitted for publication, but on March 22, 1905, Harper's Bazaar rejected it as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine." Eight days later, Twain wrote to his friend Dan Beard, to whom he had read the story, "I don't think the prayer will be published in my time.
None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth." Because he had an exclusive contract with Harper and Brothers, Mark Twain could not publish "The War Prayer" elsewhere and it remained unpublished until 1923.

That makes it a more serious and enjoyable book, since the central plot device doesn't have to be supported by the premise of interloping aliens or meddling time travelers as is the case in other of his works.
In "How Few Remain" he continues on this theme and actually broadens this perspective.
While the plot occasionally languishes and the number of characters in the book sometimes make events hard to follow, "How Few Remain" is still a very entertaining, and moreover, thought-provoking book.

Famed alternate history author Harry Turtledove posits just that scenario in his book, How Few Remain, a book that is in no way related to his previous alternate history examination of the Civil War, The Guns of the South.
In many ways, How Few Remain serves to set the stage for the future novels in Turtledove’s Great War series, of which it the first installment.
Unfortunately, the concept behind How Few Remain begs to be further explored, and could have easily spanned three or four novels by itself.
