HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK
How Stella lost her "groove" in the first place was not really all that important to me, but the way she got it back...if only we could all be so lucky.
Stella is quite sensitive about the topic, not because she had sex with a man young enough to be her son, but because she knows she fell in love with him.
Stella's emotions go into overdrive when she is laid-off from her job and her best friend faces a serious illness.

Her longtime bosom buddy (played by Whoopi Goldberg), who lives in New York, encourages her to see that perhaps she is being consumed by her work and they arrange to meet for a vacation – given over to enjoyment of the senses – in Jamaica.
Stella becomes involved with a well-educated, wise for his years, articulate, kind, Jamaican hunk – who happens to be 20 years her junior.
Stella’s sisters, particularly, are weak foils which seem to exist in the story for no other reason than to provide extremes of middle-class pretensions on the one hand and tedious, sophomoric, four-letter humor on the other.

Stella was pawing at her face, shaking her head, whining and yelping in pain.
Stella dashed over, picked the bird up, and then as if only that minute realizing what she had done, she dropped it and with her tail between her legs slunk back to the trailer and into her box.
Stella was as happy as I was rolling around in the grass and licking and chewing on me as I rolled her back and forth.

SPLICEDwire: "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" review
I'm generally a sucker for romance, and I came close to liking "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," the latest adaptation from one of Terry McMillan's bonding women books ("Waiting to Exhale"), this one about a 40-year-old high-stakes broker (Angela Bassett) who finds herself revitalized in the arms of a Jamaican hunk half her age.
Stella returns home to San Francisco determined that her fling is over.
She talks about how she always wanted to be a furniture designer and, despite the fact that they're both unemployed, Winston buys her an expensive lathe, demonstrating that while he's a cute, beguiling stud, he also has a tender heart.

And, in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, a surprisingly low-key romantic melodrama adapted by Ron Bass and Terry McMillan from McMillan's novel, the issues that arise from such a May/September male/female pairing are sensitively and intelligently explored.
How Stella Got Her Groove Back is loosely based on McMillan's own experience of falling in love and setting up house with a Jamaican man young enough to be her son.
Soon Stella, who embarked upon the vacation in an uptight and unsettled mood, is beginning to unwind and rediscover the part of her that had gotten lost under the business suits.

Stella lacks the heart and soul of a true "Terry McMillan" story; it's the same by the numbers May/December romance story used in one of those horrible made for TV adaptations of a Danielle Steele or a Jackie Collins novel.
Expecting an interesting insight into how she fashioned her back into the exquisite example of lumbar beauty that it is today, I was disappointed to see just another film about a San Francisco stock broker who is persuaded by her colorful New York girlfriend Delilah to take a well deserved, first-class vacation to Jamaica.
She even goes back with her son so he can meet this guy and wouldn't you know it, but he comes back to America to be with her.

HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK movie review, In Film Australia
Stella (Angela Bassett) is an amazingly attractive 40-year-old who has a respectable job, which rakes in the dollars.
But McMillan expects us to believe that Stella’s "groove" is gone by simply piecing together a few scenes of her at work, and quoting a few lines of dialogue about her having to get out more.
Stella and Winston sing a boring chorus of "should we or should we not stay together", and that ultimately lasts for the rest of the ordeal.

'How Stella Got Her Groove Back'
There are elements to like about "Stella." Newcomer Diggs is as natural and charismatic as he is handsome and, as Stella's earthy best friend Delilah, Whoopi Goldberg steals every scene she is in.
The talented Bassett is asked to do little here other than model sportswear and wrinkle her forehead about her future with a man young enough to be her son, both of which she accomplishes with ease.
But we never knew the character before she misplaced her groove, and the film supplies scant evidence of her current malaise.

Stella may be frothy and paper-thin, but it's also another great success for star Angela Bassett, who transforms the film into an infomercial for her considerable abilities.
Whether you regard Stella's getting her groove back as a feminist battle cry or as a silly wish-fulfillment fantasy, the movie delivers guilt-free escapism about pretty people having wicked-hot fun in pretty places.
The movie, adapted by Terry McMillan from her semi-autobiographical novel, is pointedly boundary-breaking in its positive portrayal of a May-September relationship between a younger man and an older woman.
