I realized that a quilting bee was a good way to tell the stories of eight women who had gathered to make a wedding quilt for a granddaughter who had come to spend a hot, airless California summer in their small town.
As I watched them filming the group quilting scenes, I marveled at the seeming ease with which the actresses slipped into this world of quilting: a place of camaraderie, deep loyalty, conflict, and love for an art that can be created out of disparate lives.

REVIEW--How to Make An American Quilt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
How To Make An American Quilt, now at the Storyteller, is the first American film by Australian film maker, Jocelyn Moorhouse--whose last film, PROOF, did well on the American Art House Scene.
Like the quilt in the title, the structure of the film is patterned--laying out the stories of several lives into a beautiful and pleasing arrangement--and although this is an interesting choice for the film maker, the result is an uneven pace and occasionally sluggish plot line.
Still, How To Make An American Quilt offers a complex and authentic exploration of the relationships between men and women, and for this, and for the many wonderful performances, it is worth seeing.

How to Make an American Quilt - Thomas Newman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
How to Make an American Quilt makes a good companion piece to Little Women, although in this instance, the story covers more than a century, the quilt an unsubtle metaphor for the rich tapestry of life.
The tone is immediately set by the quietly luminous Quilting Theme, a lovely, pastoral tune with Newman toning down his usually fragile string textures and replacing them with something a little warmer.
Although Newman's contribution is under half an hour, the music is still well worth hearing and if not quite as memorable as Little Women and hampered by the unfortunate production, How to Make an American Quilt is still well worth seeking out.
