Transformer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transformers come in a range of sizes from a thumbnail-sized coupling transformer hidden inside a stage microphone to gigawatt units used to interconnect large portions of national power grids, all operating with the same basic principles and with many similarities in their parts.
Transformers may also be enclosed by magnetic shields, electrostatic shields, or both to prevent outside interference from affecting the operation of the transformer or to prevent the transformer from affecting the operation of other devices (such as CRTs in close proximity to the transformer).
Transformers may also be enclosed for reasons of safety, both to prevent contact with the transformer during normal operation and to contain possible fires that occur as a result of abnormal operation.

For a transformer to operate continuously, the primary winding must be connected to an intermittent source of current or to some source of alternating current.
Transformer Losses: A properly designed transformer is a very efficient device; there are certain factors that prevent the transformation of the input voltage and current to the desired output voltage and current with 100% efficiency.
In iron core transformers, the iron must also be considered as a conductor because it is affected by the magnetic field just as the secondary winding is. Small voltages are induced in the core by the changing magnetic field; these currents cause I squared R losses in the core.

The transformer by itself is not a complete unit therefore UL recognizes it as a component.
The further the distance between the fixture and the transformer, the bigger the voltage drop, and this is what causes the fixtures to flicker.
The key is to select a transformer that is equal to the total of the wattage, or one that is the next step up.

A neon sign (luminous tube) transformer is the usual source though an oil burner ignition transformer will work in a pinch (some say better and cheaper) or you could build an inverter type power supply.
Connect the high tension output of the transformer to the two wires and you should be all set.
Neon sign transformers have current limited outputs - 30 mA is typical - but that is still highly dangerous - lethal under the wrong conditions.

Transformer cores have a quoted permeability, which is a measure of how well they "conduct" a magnetic field.
Transformers are usually designed based on the power required, and this determines the core size for a given core material.
All countries have safety standards that apply to transformers where electrical isolation is important, and if in any doubt about the safety of a transformer for a particular purpose, make sure that you verify that the transformer complies with the relevant standard(s).

Fundamental Series Item : Transformer Efficiency   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Transformer losses in power distribution networks can exceed 3% of the total electrical power generated and are estimated to total 140 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year in the U.S. The Energy Star program estimates that converting these transformers to higher efficiency units would reduce wasted electricity by about 61 billion kWh each year.
Core losses continue whenever the transformer is energized; therefore, when the expected loading is variable or unknown, the size selection is a compromise between core loss and coil loss.
Making the case for utilities to purchase energy-efficient transformers is difficult.

PS Audio - Finding and Fixing Hum
The short and simple answer is that transformers hum because of an effect known as 'lamination rattle' caused by DC voltage on the line or poor construction or both.
This is due to the fact that transformers work on magnetic fields and the magnetic fields need to change their polarity (North to South and back again) to make the transformer work properly.
Because transformers work when the coil magnets switch poles from North to South and back again, 60 times a second, DC forces the input coil to always sit in one direction and this makes the transformer a little crazy so it hums.

Scitoys Message Board: Rewireing a transformer to make it stronger
To direct current, any inductor, no matter how big or small, is just a piece of wire with some simple intrinsic resistance.
Transformers with huge iron cores, and many, many windings have huge inductances, and are able to see large ac currents without saturating.
Hence a primary winding of 2 wraps would be a very poor design for any transformer that plugs into a big, stiff voltage like the 117VAC we use in the United States.
