Wasp removal is one of the primary reasons nest boxes must be monitored weekly, especially in early spring, when wasps will often occupy nest boxes before the birds get a chance.
It had discarded the wasp before it landed but by the serenity it displayed, it wasn't stung so the Eastern Bluebird may rule over the wasp as long as it is a one on one situation out in the open.
These wasps are different from the ones often found in the upper rear corners of nest boxes during the season and they are MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE and in an "attack mode." It is easy to assume that, because a box is not used for the nesting of bluebirds, it is entirely dormant.
