  Howaldtswerke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Howaldtswerke is a German shipyard founded October 1838 in Kiel at the Bay of Kiel of the Baltic Sea by the engineer August Howaldt and the Kiel entrepreneur Johann Schweffel under the name "Maschinenbauanstalt und Eisengießerei Schweffel and Howaldt", initially building boilers.
The first steam engine for naval purposes was built in 1849 for the Von der Tann, a gunboat for the small navy of Schleswig-Holstein.
Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) worked with Kockums AB and Northrop Grumman and to offer a Visby class corvette derivative in the American Focused Mission Vessel Study, a precursor to the Littoral Combat Ship program.

This study is expected to result in the development and construction of a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), one element of the DD(X) family of surface combatants planned for construction by the Navy during the next quarter century.

It seems odd to me that my boat, which used to be a leisure boat for high ranking officers in the Russian army, had an engine (it has been replaced) that was made by "Kieler Howaldtswerke" in Western Germany.
The Volga was used in the Kaliningrad area, so it is not too far away from Kiel, but if I am not mistaken, the cold war was in period of high tension during the time that the Volga was built.
I could not find anything that simultaneously contained "Kieler Howaldtswerke" and "Volga" or "hydrofoil", however there was reference to the company having built some ships (eg, fish factory ship) for "Sudoimport" which was also the Soviet firm that managed the export of hydrofoils built in the USSR, including Volgas.

Belusan, a 200-ton gunboat, was captured in the Philippines in 1898 but never commissioned.
The first Belusan (IX-187), a tanker, was built in 1920 by Howaldtswerke, Kiel, Germany, as Vistula; bareboat chartered from the War Shipping Administration; taken over at Brisbane, Australia, 11 February 1945; and commissioned 14 February 1945, Lieutenant Commander W. Allen in command.
Attached to Service Force, 7th Fleet, Belusan served as a shuttle tanker in Australian waters until departing I April for Humboldt Bay, New Guinea, and Subic Bay, Luzon.

In June 2005, the German Navy will decommission its final Type 205 class submarine.
Laid down in January 1966 at Howaldtswerke in Kiel, Germany, the submarine has remained in service since 1969.
Though built with eight 533-mm bow-mounted torpedo tubes, the U 12 no longer carries armament and is not considered a combatant, having operated as an auxiliary trials submarine for over a decade.
