Howard Alden - Jazz Guitarist - Home
Howard Alden has been a Concord Jazz recording artist since the late '80s where his prolific recorded output as leader, co-leader, and versatile sideman, has captured an artist of consistently astonishing virtuosity and originality.
One of the many highlights in Howard Alden's fruitful association with Concord Jazz came in 1991 when, at the urging of Concord President, Carl Jefferson, Alden recorded with one of his all-time heroes, seven-string guitar master George Van Eps on the album Thirteen Strings.
Howard can be heard on the soundtrack to the 1999 Woody Allen movie "Sweet and Lowdown", starring Sean Penn, who was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a legendary jazz guitarist in the '30s.

Howard Alden is to the guitar what Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Dan Barrett, and Ken Peplowski are to the tenor, trumpet, trombone, and clarinet.
Part of a youthful swing movement that gained momentum in the 1980s, Alden plays the earlier pre-bop styles quite effectively but also has the ability to perform the music of Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, and he is equally talented on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and his rarely played banjo.
Alden began playing guitar at age ten and he counts his early influences as guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, and George Van Eps in addition to Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie.

 Interview with Howard Alden
Howard Alden chooses his words as carefully as he chooses the notes he plays.
I was also struck by the content of the story, which is in many ways a classic American jazz tale: a 10 year old kid takes some banjo lessons, becomes inspired, begins practicing and through hard work, dedication and talent becomes a well established name in the world of jazz.
Howard's first professional gig was as a banjo player working in pizza parlors in Southern California.

Las Vegas SUN: Regent calls black colleague 'orangutan'
Alden, who has been pushing for Howard's ouster since it was revealed that Howard had accessed UNLV student and staff records, told listeners of the Alan Stock and Heidi Harris morning show on KXNT 840-AM on Thursday that Howard's behavior sends the wrong message to young people.
Alden said he characterized an orangutan as non-human, dysfunctional and unable to construct clear sentences but said he did not know that referring to a fl woman as a orangutan would have racist connotations.
Howard's original charges of "institutional racism" were prompted by what she called Alden's attempts to kill her pet project, the Millennium Bound Outreach Center.

The 45-year old Alden and the 77-year old Pizzarelli may be a generation apart, but they are certainly cut from the same cloth.
Alden is showcased by himself on two tunes, Bix Beiderbecke's “In the Dark,” and ever-so-briefly on an old warhorse, “I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles.” Alden imbues the Bix tune with a light and airy feel and rids ”Bubbles” of any sense of cliché with a treatment that is beautifully introspective.
This album is a testament to both Pizzarelli's enduring genius on the guitar and Alden's innate ability to absorb the styles of those who came before and come up with something of his own making.

Jazz guitarist Alden had been drafted as Sean Penn's guitar coach for Allen's gently funky "Sweet and Lowdown," about a musician on the ethical skids.
Alden himself is in his early 40s, a tad young to be an afficionado of Reinhardt, George Van Eps, Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Bucky Pizzarelli, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell and others who play a smooth, swingin' orotund tone upon the foundation laid by Louie Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
Alden claims to have come around on rock and blues, but when asked to name some influential artists in those genres, he pauses for the only time in the interview.

On a rainy Sunday night in late February, the 28th, Bob and I decided to put down the chisels and computer mouse, respectively, and go hear Howard Alden who was performing with his lovely wife, singer Terrie Richards, and a bass player at a wonderful restaurant called the Shanghai Jazz in Madison, New Jersey.
Now, I grew up and graduated high school in nearby Chatham Township and knew the Shanghai is in a posh section of north Jersey's Morris County.
(Interestingly, Terrie told us it was the first time she had sung that song for Howard.) Call me sentimental but Howard's version is the best in the book.
