Jones played end at Yale and coached Syracuse to a 6-3-1 record after graduating in 1908.
He interrupted that career to coach Yale to a 5-2-3 record in 1913 and he left business for good in 1916 to concentrate on coaching at the University of Iowa.
Jones changed that, adding rivals such as Iowa, Notre Dame, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Pittsburgh, and Georgia to the schedule over the years.
