The Harp Reference: Joe Filisko On Howard Levy
Howard’s only “agenda” is to play the music that is welling up in his head on his instrument of choice: the diatonic harmonica.
Howard’s dilemma will always be that he “hears” more than blues and modal music in his head, and is determined to play it on an instrument that wasn't supposed to have all the notes.
Howard’s achievement is that he has been able to figure out how to play all the notes, and take melodic playing to previously unimagined levels, because he BELIEVED he could.

 (Richard Hunter/harmonica: Buckeye State 1999
I noticed immediately that Howard's technique involves moving the head, not the harp, an approach that I have argued against vehemently on Harp-L. My apologies to all who have suffered through my head-vs.-harp diatribes in the past; moving the head can't be all bad if Howard Levy can do it at such high speeds.
Howard advised me that half of overblowing is setting the harp up properly; in response to my question about whether he could reliably get all the overblown pitches on every harp, his answer was yes, mostly.
Howard's lines, dazzling though they were, did not have a uniform tone and attack; it was often obvious when a note was played with a bend or an overblow.

JS Online: Levy bringing his harmonica and mandolin to town
Levy's greatest distinction is being considered the world's most advanced player of the 10-hole diatonic harmonica, the kind that is standard on blues harp recordings.
Simply put, Levy developed a technique in which he not only bends the notes he blows downward, producing the pitch-bending wails that put the feeling into blues-harp playing; he also bends the notes upward, which yields different, "missing" tones of the diatonic scale, allowing Levy to take a full-scale, "chromatic" approach to blues harp.
Levy will be in town March 29 and 30 for a brief sit-in with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, playing mandolin in the fourth movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 7.
