		During 1945-49 Howard McGhee was one of the finest trumpeters in jazz, an exciting performer with a sound of his own who among the young bop players ranked at the top with Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro.
		He was with Charlie Barnet (1942-43), returned to Kirk (where he sat next to Fats Navarro in the trumpet section) and had brief stints with Georgie Auld and Count Basie before traveling to California with Coleman Hawkins in 1945; their concise recordings of swing-to-bop transitional music (including "Stuffy," "Rifftide" and "Hollywood Stampede") are classic.
		McGhee stayed in California into 1947, playing with Jazz at the Philharmonic, recording and gigging with Charlie Parker (including the ill-fated "Lover Man" date) and having an influence on young players out on the Coast.

		He was briefly in bands led by Lionel Hampton, Andy Kirk, Count Basie and Charlie Barnet.Howard McGhee was the one that brought be-bop in California in 1946, a fact that was disapproved by older musicians like Kid Ory.
		Drug problems sidelined McGhee for much of the 1950s, but he resurfaced in the 1960s, appearing in many George Wein productions.
		His career sputtered again in the mid-'60s and he didn't record again until 1976.

		This formerly rare session (reissued on CD by Black Lion) has eight selections (plus four previously unreleased alternate takes) by a quintet featuring Mcghee, tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Junior Mance, bassist George Tucker and drummer Jimmy Cobb.
		The trumpeter wrote arrangements for all of the songs (four of which were his originals) and the writing makes the band sound like a regularly working group rather than having the feel of a loose jam session.

		This excellent album of vintage bop opens with seven tracks recorded in Chicago during February 1948, using members of the band that Howard Mcghee was leading at Chicago's Argyle Lounge at the time.
		Milt Jackson and Percy Heath are heard on the first three tunes, along with an unnamed baritone saxophonist.
		For the second session Mcghee used an entirely different band, with a tenor player who is believed to have been Kenny Mann and a rhythm section of Hank Jones, Ray Brown, and the great J.c.
